Cutting back clematis - help!

I've got four clemastis in a garden I have just inhereted as I just moved into my new house. They are in a real mess and need some guidance please on how to sort them out. They have obviously rarely been pruned and so have a really spindally base, which is all dead looking. Then at the top they are crazyily inter twined. I really want to save them, but can't cope with how they look now... What do you suggest. My gut instict is to cut them right right back to a a couple of feet and try to get them to bush out. They are about 5ft and a bit now. Is this right? I am abit of a novice? Any advice would be muchly appreciated. Thx.
