Cutting Back Clematis

I have two clematis that were planted along with two climbing roses. For years they bloomed together and were beautiful. This past winter, however, the roses died out and left the clematis to fend for themselves.

I need to cut them both down in order to get the dead rose branches out. Will it hurt the clematis to do this? How low can I go?

Thank you for your expertise!
