When to plant a magnolia grandiflora

I need to know if I can plant magnolias now, or if it would be better to wait until the spring. I've heard that one should plant these trees in the spring, even though it is counter-intuitive. I have a huge condo going up over my back fence--can't complain too much, I had a borrowed landscape of pasture for thirty years, right in the middle of the city. But I don't want to look at these buildings, so am planning to plant the magnolias to block the view, or if someone can suggest something else that's tall, evergreen, and attractive, I'll consider that! At any rate, let me know if I should get out with the spade right now, or if I should wait. Thanks for the help!
