i have marand.. its NOT a dragon eye .. IMHO ...

OD is defined.. in my mind.. as BANDED coloration on the leaves ....

marand... seems to have a yellow center on green needles ... it may look like an eyeball ... but it doesnt fit the definition above ... no bands ...

its a transitory coloration .... i have seen it.. but never when i have a camera in hand ...

go figure ...

That's what I thought Ken.

The pix I had seen seem to put it more in a winter coloration gold pine. I have never seen a non upright form of a OD that rivals the banding of the densiflora and parviflora pine ODs.

mine is all green in winter ..

Steve, I've never heard of a banded mugo. I am still looking for that parviflora that's an upright weeper (none in existence yet). The new Pinus strobus from Iseli is super-amazing though. Saw it on the forum here. It's not 'Angel Falls' but a new one. I cannot think of it and I forgot to write it down.

All upright, narrow, and weeping. Wow!

I'm just a member for the last copple of weeks and I'm looking now at formely subjects.
Nobody here seems to know a banded mugo cultivar, but I have two mugo cultivars in my pinetum with banded needles.
Pinus mugo 'Kokarde' and Pinus mugo 'Sunshine'
Both are very beautiful, specialy in winter!

I don't rate p. mugo 'Chameleon' note reliable in the UK climate. Is Pinus mugo 'Kokarde' a better plant than P. mugo 'Sunshine' for variegation ?

Barbara, can't speak for Henk and Edwin's plants, but the variegation on my plant is still there at this time of year but a lot duller - certainly not as good as in the summer.

Hi Barbara.Thanks for the link.On my plant the needle ends look like they are scorched;then again in the sunshine they appeared copper-coloured.We'll wait and see...I think those mugo's are great.Henk sent me 'Laarheide' and 'Zundert'.Also a yellow P.sylverstis of Norwegian origin.Just waiting for spring so I can go out there and do some gardening.I think we moaned and groaned a bit too much about the continual drought during the past five years .So now we're getting well served...the soil can take no more.Just saw on the news that one of the best known ski-resorts has had upwards of 8 meters (25 ft)of snow.People can't get in or out of the place.That said,I also saw the terrible fire-storm images from Australia...I sometimes think of the fire-hasard with conifers and other inflammable plants.It can get so dry in summer! I'd hate to see those little mugos go up in smoke!!! T.

I think 'Sunshine' as a better cultivar then 'Kokarde'
'Sunshine' is nice variegated every year, but 'Kokarde' needs a lot sun in Spring otherwise the variegation is scarcely seen.
'Misty' shows it's banded needles in Autumn because during Summer the needles are a completely golden yellow, which turns into a greenish yellow with yellow stipes whenn it's getting colder.

'Chameleon' is of Dutch origin.
The banded needles are green with yellow in Spring and Summer, but when it's getting colder the yellow will turn into a reddish colour.
I can't explain why this cultivar isn't reliable in the U.K. climate.

I removed my 'Chameleon' and gave it away a few years ago.
Didn't seem to colour up for me , perhaps I should have given it more time ? or perhaps our climate isn't hot enough in the summer or cold enough in the winter (usually)
Do you have a good photo of 'Chameleon'
