Pinus parviflora 'Ogon Janome' Dragon's Eye Help

Good Saturday morning. I find myself in need of expert advice concerning the Dragon's Eye which I purchased in August from a local nursery. The tree was grown by Bizon, I believe.

The tree is a very nice size...2.5 wide by 2.5 tall and has appeared to adapt very well to its planting. However, here's the problem. We had our first frost a week or so ago, with temps getting down to 36F. The tree has since turned golden yellow, which I assumed as part of Autumn's coloring. To my horror, I noticed yesterday that the needles are drying and falling off. And it's most of the tree's foliage...not just a few. This cannot be normal since this is an evergreen.

So...thoughts? Medical advice?

If the needles aren't falling off at the tips, you are good. You are likely experiencing a normal phenomena known as fall needle loss.

many of my yellow dragon eye.. totally denuded themselves the first 3 winters .. losing every single needle ...

my OJ right now looks like heck.. with all the yellow burned off ....

do NOT fert.. no medicine.. insure it is moist throughout the rootzone.. dig a small hole of 6 inches to insure such ... next to the ball of roots which were planted ... mulch properly.. etc..

life is in those buds at the branch tips.. as long as those buds remain hard.. and tannish brown.. you should be all set ...

OJanome.. is one of the worst plants i have ever owned for vigor.. i wish you all the luck in the world with it..

i have a couple leuco ... got them from gary gee .....when gee visited with joy ... i pointed them out.. and commented on their lack of vigor but refusal to thrive.. he laughed.. and said something along the lines that he was fixated on them for a few years ... back then .. i collected any name not already in my dB ... as in the leuco part of the name ..... never figured out why they refuse to thrive ... i dont recall if it was an understock issue .... recollection is a tough nut.. i do not intend to put words in anyones mouth ... gary used to pop in and out of GW once in a blue moon.. i will defer to his knowledge.. and his recollection of any conversation we had .... resinosa aurea... is stunning.. to die for.. and incredible ... go for it ... i would suggest.. BK even for a few years.. over the ogon ... but the ogon for the decades ... i dont know your toe curling versus shock of loss/death quotient ... i guess if it were me... i would go small on BK ... less investment to lose.. if budget is an issue ... in other words.. a mall resinosa.. and a small BK ... being the same investment as one larger of either .... but again.. budget is yoru issue .. not mine ... maybe pix later.. if i am amused ... though i am not sure i was ever inspired enough to even take a pic of the leuco's .... and that has to tell you something ... ken

No way Ken. It won't be a fertilizer issue unless the plant is "weak, has yellow coloration, wimply candles, or is being attacked by insects due to its' poor condition. However, if the plant were not growing very well, and it were mine, I'd start fertilizing it and I wouldn't hold back either. I'd fertilize the hell out of it. That would be the very first thing I would do. Fertilizer helps plants along, ken. This plant is located near to me in Iowa. Probably zone 5, maybe 4ish. There is no sand here so I cannot comment although, I do know that conifers grow very well in pure sand such as yours. I've read about it. Here's a zoom. Yes garcanad regarding the needles; I had run across comments on an old thread from Aug. 2009 (great information form Ken and Coniferjoy, which kept me from acquiring one --- I did acquire your pinus parviflora "Fukai", Ogon Janome", and another "Fukazumi" to add to my collection in the last two years (the blues of needles gives me that cooling effect and soothing effect -- like your second pic planting bed). I felt my "Go Jin" was too lonely of this cultivar (LOL). Limited space also is curbing my acquisition (but it helps allot from yours and others experiences ---HELP allot more). From what I see of your two pics; I love your garden, striking contrast and a soothing combinations of beds. Actually; because our house face south and west, summer sun (excessive unusual past 10 years of temps.) --- I would suffer the same with "Golden Ghost". If I can find one in a one gallon (#1); I might get to experiment in protected and sheltered (high winds), sun and high winds are other factors that I haven't gotten one. Thanks for the words of wisdom...it's mulched and have been keeping it properly watered. Tips are still green, pliable, and healthy, so must be the fall shedding. This conifer world is all new to me....roses I understand, conifers, not so much. Thanks for the guidance!

no.. its not JUST fall shedding..

its that COMPLICATED by transplant on a LARGE specimen ...

never forget.. its all in the buds ...

Yes, timing would suggest cold damage. Based on behavior of one I was given, this form may not always stay well-banded anyway.
