why did my grapefruit tree die?

User

My Duncan grapefruit tree has died. It was about 30-35 years old and 10-12" in diameter. It lost its leaves, and then the dieback crawled along the branches to the trunk. Large sheets of bark peeled off the trunk. There were some new shoots very low on the trunk, above the graft, but those too have died. There was no evidence of obvious insect infestations or diseased leaves.

Could this be Roundup poisoning? The previous owners used too much RU on the property.

Was the tree just simply too old? I get conflicting info on the web about the life expectancy of citrus trees. Some sources say 25 years, some say 100+.

Any idea what caused this? My other citrus trees are fine. Some have dieback on a few branches, but nothing like the grapefruit tree.

thanks,

Avalon
