I'm pretty much a newbie too, but I've had good luck planting my clematis near the deck, where its roots can scramble under and be cool and shaded, while its top gets plenty of sun.

I've also had rabbits eat the tips off very young clematis, which I presume is what you'll be getting. Maybe you should pot it up first and let it grow a bit before setting it in the landscape?

But have fun -- hey, you can't go wrong for three bucks!

I tried ordering that one last week and it told me they were sold out.

I really don't have anywhere to put the other ones I ordered, though, so I don't think I will miss not getting one anyway.

When I was on the phone, "Jennifer" was trying to adjust the order, and give me my credit, but evidently her system told her that it was currently being picked/packed for shipment, which is why she could no longer make changes to the order.
I clicked on the email confirmation, and the message at the top of the order had gone from "Processing" to "Order Processed."

Clem that you will receive most likely be bareroot and very small. Put it in a bucket with water for an hour or so upon recieval then plant in reasonably small pot with some potting soil or potting soil mixed with some compost- it should still be light texture. You might want to add little of slow release fertilizer like osmocote.
Keep the top up and let it grow over the summer in the pot, water it frequently and use 1/4-half strength liquid fertilizer once every week or so.
If the roots start showing up through the holes you might want to repot it into bigger container at same time bury it slightly deeper than previous pot. One galon of nice roots is usually good size to be planted out.
Dig out big hole backfill it with your soil mixed up with some good compost- clems are heavy feeders. Make sure your hole is deep enough as you want to plant your clem about 6 inches deeper than it was in your pot to make sure it will have enough strength to send up many stems.
Water well and dilligently, feed well.
If clem is not big enough this summer you might want to overwinter it in the pot either in heated garage, basement or bury whole pot outside and put lots of oak leaves on the ground.
Same as you I ordered few clems from Park and got them yesterday. We'll see...

Don't worry too much about soil ph. Western Oregon is very acidic and Clematis grow like weeds here.

What a lucky mistake! Although I don't think they should have charged you for an extra plant that was their mistake...but I think you will be happy with it, and what a way to start a clematis collection!
I ordered a bunch from them, but this one is sold out. Remember to post pictures next summer. All the pics I have seen of this one just knock my socks off.

If you do plant it in a pot, I would only do so for one year before putting it in the ground with plenty of bonemeal and composted manure, about 2 cups of each mixed well and placed in the bottom of the whole. Then I would buy another clematis next year to plant with it. Clematis plants become very addicting, In another season or two when it is covered with flowers you will understand and to see a combo of another clematis planted with it or a rosebush, especially a climber is breathtaking. Put them on a trellis or fence or something to climb up. If you do order another one, get it through a much better place like Silver Star Vinery or Chalk Hill. I have dealt with that company too and choose to stay away from their tiny little plants,especially clematis. Look up daves garden on the internet, go to garden watchdog and there you will find ratings and writeups on how these mail order companies due and who to stay away from.

I did a typo on my expiration date on my credit card and they sent me a post card rather than emailing or calling and it took almost two weeks for me to get it. Good grief. I've been waiting and waiting for my order......

buyorsell888 the same thing happened to me only I got an email. I don't think either one of us made a typo. I think others have had similar problems, and it's their overloaded system. I can type my credit card number in my sleep. LOL I'm getting tired of waiting but then again the deals were so good. I hope your order comes soon.

I type credit card numbers daily as part of my job and did at my previous twenty year career too so I darn near called the gal a liar when I called.

Oh that's bad. One can only hope they'll toss in a goodie or 2 for our trouble, right? =) Yesterday I was in the house when my dh came inside to tell me I had something from Park Seed. I nearly lept off my chair. Then he handed me the post card, "An Important Message From Park Seed." Ugh.

I got my box yesterday. The plants were very small except for the Miscanthus 'Gold Bar' and Echinacea 'Kim's Knee High' which were both larger than expected.

I priced them locally and if I would have bought them locally it would have cost what I paid for the entire shipment from Park's.

Joy Creek Nursery, which is the breeder of M.'Gold Bar' wanted $15 for a 4" pot on Saturday and the plant was no bigger than the one I got from Park's.

I bought clematis online from several vendors this year and,by far, Joy Creek was the best - i.e. the most roots! 1 gallon plants absolutely filled with roots. Maybe it depends on the actual plant and what they've got at the time. I ordered early. And one of my Joy Creek clems was Patricia Anne Fretwell.

Their Clematis are nice but they are higher priced than other local retailers.
