Blue light vs Multi blue

I grew three bare root marked HF Young which they certainly are not. I've been alternating between if they are Blue Light or Multi Blue. Just this morning I've discovered I might have one of each. I'm going to watch closely this summer as these continue to bloom because the blossoms do vary on old vs new wood. Does anyone have these varieties and can comment on if the internal layer is more hairy or more like narrow petals?

Blue Light can produce blooms that resemble both of your pictures. I grow it and have seen both bloom types on the same plant. Blue Light will bloom double on old wood and single on new wood and requires winter chill to bloom double so any single blooms you have are ones blooming on new wood.

My Blue Light was trimmed to the ground this past winter so all I am getting this year are the single blooms.

Multi-Blue always looks like the middle picture but darker.

Never like the top and bottom pictures. I've had mine for over five years and it is always fully double even after hard pruning and/or moving it.

I think you have three Blue Lights.

I don't grow either of these clematis, but I thought that I might suggest that you look at Edith Malek's website. She is a southern California clematis grower who helped to get out the message that clematis can grow in hotter climates than used to be thought. I was really encouraged to try more clematis in my climate because of her book "Simply Clematis". In her book, she has a page for Blue Light, noting that it is a sport of Mrs. Cholmondeley. She also calls it "a beguiling clematis" and "an attention getter", and she says that it has "tremendous longevity as a cut flower". The listing in the book adds these characteristics: it blooms early and then repeats it grows up to six feet tall it does equally well in sunny or shady conditions it is colored a pastel lavender blue She doesn't have a listing for Crystal Fountain in her book (published in 2004), but on her website, she has an article about sports, and she notes that Crystal Fountain is a sport of H.F. Young. She also has it pictured in the gallery section of her website. Perhaps your library has a copy of "Simply Clematis" that you could borrow. Multi Blue/The President: Good Companion??

I planted The President last year so I don't have an accurate opinion on her blooms yet since I kept it small so the roots would grow a little stronger - but what I saw, I liked. I would also like to grow a companion clem with her so I am curious as to the responses you'll be getting. I was just thinking of finding a nice white (was leaning towards Marie Boisselot?) but am intrigued by a pink / purple combo. I have David phlox growing in front of the trellis so I don't really need any more white in that bed but I would like something that will help the purple pop out a little bit more.

Enjoy the blooms now. If you want, you can cut it back after it blooms, but most of us in the cold north don't get a second bloom if it is cut back after the initial bloom. Otherwise, you can deadhead it and wait for the second flowering period. Whether you cut it or deadhead it, give it a little liquid fertilizer if you have it. Here is how I prune Multi Blue and other group 2's In fall, once the night temps are consistently in the 30's and lower 40's, I cut it down a bit to get rid of the heavy top. Then in early spring, before the leaf buds break, I clean up the plant by cutting the vines at different heights -- About 1/4 at 1 foot, 1/4 at 2', 1/4 at 3', 1/4 at 4 or 5 if that much survives. I use these measurements because it's on a 6 foot support. Staggering the length of the vines will give you blooms all along the length of the plant. Then, nip off the petioles, and very gently, (it's easy to crack them) rearrange the vines and lightly tie them to the support.

I just recently painted my MBR palladian blue and I think it is such a wonderfully serene, cheerful color...I just love it. However, in the pic you posted, the Woodlawn (also a very pretty color) looks like a better match to your tiles...but I am in agreement with the others that it needs to be softened/lightened up a bit so that your gorgeous tiles take center stage. You might have already tried it but SW Rainwashed is also very pretty but it is really similar to palladian so not sure if that would be an option for you. Also, what about BM Quiet Moments??? I like the idea of a soft ethereal blue...not so keen on the idea of gray (it would be way too much gray IMO). Let us know what you decide! If you get more samples mixed up, post pics!!

I grow both Blue Light and Multi-Blue. The pictures all look like Blue Light. Definitely not Multi-Blue which is darker blue with violet/plum stamenoids.

I want my Blue Light to get like Miguels!(I sure miss him and his knowledge!)
On my label I have "prune after flowering" but I see that Miguel said he pruned it in winter. So guess he answered my question after all! I also notice that the trellis he has his on is rather short. So does Blue Light stay short in this area of the country??-- SE NC.
It has beautiful flowers but my vine isn't full. Guess because of the time/way I have pruned it!
I would like to know your experiences with this clematis.

His sage wisdom is immortalized in these forums and I hope they are forever here!!..You didn't say how old your "Blue Light" is..hard pruning forces clematis to send more vines from the soil..."Blue Light" is one that only gets 6-6 1/2 feet tall..Yes in comparison to many it is a short height variety...Jeanne
