I thing you can probably also re-root the rosette leaves, if you manage to pull them off at their bases.... but they look like really tough old birds....so it might prove to be too much of a herculean task! I echo the above advice... chop off the top, add cinnamon powder it to prevent rotting, and let the pups grow a bit before removing them.... Interesting development, eh....?

What kind of drainage do you have in the planter. These babies need absolute drainage and soil that will dry out. I would think a 6 inch layer of coarse gravel on the bottom of the planter, cover the drainage holes with plastic screening. then mix the cactus mix you used with pumice at 1 part cactus mix to 2 parts pumice. Even decomposed granite available at landscaping supply stores would be great for the species. Water no more than once a week. It enjoys full sun in a warm spot.

This is the only Agave that I get a reaction from when poked. I get a rash even if brushed by the leaves when walking by. Someone told me the spikes along the leaves have sodium hydroxide crystals in them that are causing my reaction. I don't know if that is true. My neighbor planted 3 in an island in his front yard. Now he regrets it. This one is about 1.5 to 2 feet tall and pupping on runners. Now it is about 4 feet tall. He's getting pups in the yard, too. I still think it is a pretty plant. It just needs too much maintenance that I can't give it. Although . . . I never considered keeping it in a pot. Oh - and our green waste won't take these unless you cut all the fronds off and bundle them. They don't want to be poked by them, but they took my Agave desmettiana (after it bloomed) with no questions asked.
