Is this trellis OK for clematis,please

I would like to plant a clematis in front of this lattice fence.

There is some kind of bush there that I am not too fond of. I would like to take that out and put some kind of evergreen bush that does not get too big (suggestions welcome) and then have the clematis behind it hopefully climbing up the lattice.

I am in zone 4 and this area receives sun from early morning till about 1pm.

Do you think this will work out in this area.

Clematis vines tend to grow upward but can be trained to spread sideways. You might need to staple some chicken wire to the lattice for it to be able to climb. Maybe staple the wire under that top frame board and bottom board. That's just my opinion. Others may have a different opinion. I don't know why it wouldn't work. I think it will really add to that area. The brickwork pathway is beautiful and a Clematis there would look nice and add color to the area. My neighbor used to have a 6 ft. board fence and she stapled chicken wire across a large area and her Jackamani clematis was always beautiful there.

First off, don't write off your clematis producing any blooms this year. It might just surprize you. Secondly, I am of the opinion that if you want your clematis to get itself established after chopping back, avoid planting anything too close to it that will compete with it and its water and nutrient source. Robert is correct that many annuals can become monsters since their life cycle is only one year. If you do plant something, I would suggest an annual that stays very small and you might want to plant the annual vine some distance away from where the clematis is planted and lead the vines of the annual to the trellis where you want it to climb. Again as Robert stated, don't let the foliage of the annual vine swamp out the vines of the clematis or the clematis won't be able to photosynthesis food so that it can mature properly.

Thank you for your answers. Yes, I'll try to post my pictures, just for the sake of information. I would be glad to be mistaken. I know it's the earwigs ( or something else) eating the leaves, and I don't see any visible damage from the mealybugs. I also have a different kind of damage on the rose leaves, like trails eaten trough the leaves ( their thickness) and just a thin brown membrane of the leaves remaining.... but this is not the rose forum. I am in Toronto East, zone 6a. Trust me, mealybugs are an outdoor pest. Anybody knows if they die in winter? I have managed to cut most of the branches that were going through and low over my fence, and have not seen more than one or two bugs any more on my plants. I just scrub them down with a piece of the wood mulch that I put around plants, and smash them. I know about q-tips and alcohol, but I was a little concerned about burns/ dehydration on the very young twig knots, where I usually see the mealybugs. But it's just horifying to see so many bugs on these trees and shrubs outside of the fence... systemic would not be an option for me....

Plants grown in a container - any plants, not just clems - will need frequent fertilization. Container plants need more frequent watering than do those planted inground and that frequent watering leaches out nutrients that need to be replaced. Plus, container grown plants do not have the benefit of the access to all those nutrients existing in garden soil and container potting soils tend not to have high levels of nutrients anyway. So.....since you are going to have provide additional fertilization on a routine schedule anyway, it really doesn't make any diff if there is one vine in the barrel container or three!! Pick ones that are compatible and have similar growth habits so one doesn't overwhelm the others. btw, the patio collection all tend to be very long bloomers - I'd rate most of them as having a significantly longer bloom season then either the traditional group 2 or 3 vines.

Since you are looking to pair up with type 3 (hard prune) clematis, it's easiest to stick with those. I'll list some of the ones I like a lot and let you look at photos and descriptions and decide the types of combinations you like and that are matched for vigor and size with those you have. My two most favorite are Ville de Lyon - long bloom time in my garden, and I love both the shape and color pattern of the blossoms with each petal having a rosy center and a darker red edge, and Venosa Violacea - purple along the petal edges fading to white in the center Others (in no particular order) that I grow and particularly like: Huldine Viola Emilia Plater Betty Corning Confetti C. viorna (Brushwood has one with nice pink & cream bells followed by seed heads that look almost metallic in the sun)

I agree that you might have to add some wire to help it climb. I have not had good luck with them climbing wood lattice on their own. The slats are too wide for them to grip properly. I didn't know this and had my hubby build me a bunch of lattice for them and it has been frustrating. I find they snap off rather than bend when weaving them through myself.

There are some clips at Harbor Freight, called Vine Clips that are really helpful to clip them to the lattice rather than weave them through. Once you get a framework established they will cling to each other.

I have found chicken wire to have holes too small but others have success with it.

Don't buy a fifteen foot grower and try to keep it that short, there are plenty in the six foot range that would be much easier. Like Piilu. Piilu is a bloom monster that is a compact grower.

Thanks for the replies,Pippi and buyorsell, I will look for something that grows 6feet max. And try to find some mesh or wire to staple on my lattice.

I think Clematis vines need their feet shaded so plant some other flowers in front of it is what I have always heard. What about it you go a wrought iron tellis and still plant it where you are talking about. It would still have the lattice work for a backdrop. I think it would be nice there. What about another type of vine that will give you color and a fragrance when you walk in/out of your gate? Look in some of the gardening catalogs or gardening supply catalogs or go on their websites..Plow & Hearth, Gardener's supply, LeeValley has some nice ones. If you could get it locally, you'd save on shipping charges. I saw some at Home Depot the other week. What about looking for something at a Junque shop that you could use for a trellis? You can always spray painted it whatever color you wanted. Or you can buy a brand new one and spray paint it with Rustoleum spray paints. Just a thought. Lots of options..look in some gardening magazines for ideas too.

No they don't need their feet shaded. They need moist soil and some moron years ago translated that to mean shaded.
