What do you have your clematis growing on?

I have a few vining clematis in my garden and I would like to add more. However, I don't think that I have a lot of vertical space for the clematis to climb. Can I let them sprawl on the ground, to weave about the garden? And how do you have your clematis planted? On a trellis/fence/mailbox or other?

Kristi..if you want to grow clematis that "Sprawl" among your flowerbeds..not climbers..consider Integrifolias..they do just that..I have mine climbing up into my Climbing Roses, On trellis, on Arbors on my Umbrella Trellis with my climbing roses.....if you want one on your mailbox you can buy wire fencing, cut it to the width..wrap around your mailbox and let it grow up that..they also sell mesh for that situation as well...Jeanne

I have several climbing some blue spruce trees. Had a neighbor ask me where I got the "flowering spruce".

I'm still in the process of digging my veggie garden, but next year I should be done part of it so that I can get started growing something. My garden is a very large raised bed, which I am dividing with paths into small, 3 1/2 ft wide beds that I won't need to stand on ever. With our heavy clay soil, anything to cut down on compaction will be good for the plants. In the center of my garden I plan to have a small circular bed with some roses growing in it. I plan to plant in blocks and rows; I like vegetable gardens to be ornamental as well as practical. This style of gardening is called a potager, and is supposed to be popular in europe. As for what I intend to grow: potatoes, different varieties lettuce, spinach, corn, zucchini, yellow summer squash, carrots, peas, beans, beets, broccoli and cauliflower from seed. I will use transplants for: tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, peppers, eggplant and pumpkin. I would also like to try cantaloupe and watermelon transplants, though I know they'll be iffy depending on the year. Lots of freezing, lots of canning, lots of fresh eating! Before I plant all of those, we do intend to insulate and went a corner in our basement for a root cellar as well. I'll have to wait and see what plants end up being too finicky (maybe cauliflower!) and get knocked off the list.

I let my Alamanda Cherries Jubilee Free Range out in a rock bed at the back of my yard. It's with some Juvenile bald cypress and a Dwarf Poinciana from Ricky. I hack it back couple times a year. I used to have it growing in a large pot around a trellis neat and purty looking, it looked cool, but it does so well just loping along, now. I like it! It adds some intrest and some privacy to a treeless back lot corner from the neighbors.

Bklyn, it looks like you are using the same lights as I. Nice. Are those L.E.D light bulbs? Socal very nice. I love that reflection. It looks very bright in there. NO wasted light for sure. Kvetch, you are not kidding there. I can't believe how LONG we have had this cold, snow, and below average temps, and it's not even winter yet. I keep looking at the ten day forecasters outlook and now I see 30's . no 40's. I think I am going to be sick. The ones on the porch I have to water often if I use a fan. If I don't use a fan, it can take a few weeks before they need watering, but they only stay moist thank God. The one in my all season porch, I have to water those every few days because it's much warmer in there, much more sunlight, and I also use fans. LOl. I hear you about window hogging..lol Right now my tree and orchids are competing for the best spot. Jenny, very nice. One of these days I am going to get an Australian lime. Does it produce lots of flowers that smell nice? I would go after the fragrance more than anything.. Laura, didn't it seem like yesterday when we were growing them all outside? Boy do I miss the days when all you had to do was use a hose..((( Yes, all the twist and turns one has to take to get around each tree can be such a pain. Very nice looking too.I hear you got a couple of scale? That's easy to get rid of once and for good. Let me know if you need a suggestion.)

A few plants in my garage. South window, fluorescents on timer + a 1,000 watt metal hallide lamp set to only 4 hours (otherwise too expensive). Temp around 50 to 60 degrees. Nice and chilly = very few bugs and less watering! Oroblanco fruit growing slowly ↓ May be ready by spring? These are the first fruit from a gifted rooted cutting. Key limes ↓ Most have fallen and landed in a key lime pie, which was utterly amazing! Clem-Yuz ↓ More Clem-Yuz ↓ First time this seedling bore fruit! Only a few fruit left to eat! Like a somewhat tart but seedy (10+ per fruit) Clementine. Juicy, easy to peel and full-flavored. A keeper, I think. Not sure it's 100% Clem-Yuz. But who cares, if it's good? Owari satsuma ↓ Fruit all eaten now. So-so fruit quality, but it's a young plant. Armstrong satsuma (photo taken in October) ↓ All fruit is eaten now. Exceptional fruit quality this year.

Hi! I have two deer Christmas lawn decorations (white thick wire frames that used to have white Christmas lights which all blew) that I'm trying to recycle in my garden room which is part shade - in late summer, it's mostly shade. One deer is a buck (antlers) standing upright; the other a grazing doe - each deer is about 3-31/2 feet tall and maybe 3 feet long. I was thinking of planting Clematis to cover the deer frames in summer. Is Clematis a good choice - is it too big? Can I manage the plants size without harming its flowering power? Do I need more sun? I'm looking for white or light pink - does anyone have any recommendations?

If I don't have enough sun for Clematis, can anyone recommend a flowering vine that does well in part shade/shaade in Z6?

I planted 5 clematis last fall, they are all in need of something so yesterday I went out and bought a lattace 2'x8' and tried it with just one of them. It looks really great so I am planning on doing the same with the other 4.

Rosehunter, some clematis prefer some shade--Hagley's Hybrid is one, but there are others.

I have a C. 'Rooguchi' growing into a Cotinus "Golden Spirit'. This will be its first season, but it should be gorgeous. I also have a C. rosea flopping across two Crimson Pygmy barberries and a large rock, and a C. durandii and a C. texensis 'Princess Diana' growing into a low, compact quince. This is the third year for the durandii but the first for the other two. i'm also trying to get a C. viticella to grow up into a huge Viburnum sargentii 'Susquehanna'.

I have all the fences and arbors and shed covered so am starting on the plants and I bought a herbacaeous one today too.

Hi there!

I am waiting for my new clematis to arrive. One is Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' and the other is Clematis 'Engelina' My Angel. I was thinking of growing one of them up a smallish witch hazel tree/bush that is rather leggy looking in the front of my house. Does anyone think this is a weird idea? At first I thought it would be perfect, since both the freckles and the witch hazel are winter blooming. However, everyone I've mentioned my idea to seems to think I'm loony. Any thoughts?

Have mine growing on 2x8 and 4x8 lattice from lumber company, scewed to post verical or horizontal.
Plus an oblisk made of 2x2x8 lengths held together with pieces of cross strapping,good for a clematis on each side.

I just bought a SpiroGro plant ladder on eBay that fits neatly around a lamppost -- I'm looking forward to having it covered w/clematis. It was inexpensive and easy to install.

When my girls were young we had a basketball goal in concrete by the patio. They are since grown and the goal was deep, deep in concrete and couldn't be removed SOOOOOO I removed the "goal" part and wrapped chicken wire around the square metal post. I had a Henri Clemais (large white bloom) on it and I wish I had a picture of it to show you. I covered the wire very quickly and even wondered into the dogwood tree above it. What a site! Added a great screen to the patio and a sight to behold. LOADED with blooms. I never cut it back. Several people driving by stopped and ask about it. I have since moved and really missed seeing it bloom this spring. Good luck.

I have seen others write about growing clematis in shrubs. One concern I'd have about growing them in a tree is that most are not very good at competing with tree roots. I posted a message about that earlier this year, because I have two that are near a birch tree and a Golden Rain tree, and they have been slow to grow because of the root competition. Someone told me that Clematis montana handles root competition much better. It also grows longer, I think, and could reach further up a tree.

By the way, one of my clematis (the one by the birch roots) is doing very well this year. Finally! It's also the one with its roots in the shade. The other one is growing slower and looking a little pale or yellowish.

Several years ago I planted a white clematis (variety unknown) down in the middle of a 3 x 3 foot square nandina, which is now waist high. The clematis was initially on a two foot high trellis, which has since become dislodged. I had thought that the clematis would grow up towards the sun, but have been disappointed in that it has only had one flower each year. Any suggestions on what I could do to help it out, short of making an expedition into the center of the nandina? I am a bit afraid of snakes here in Alabama, especially since there is a pond closeby in the adjacent yard, which has attracted cottonmouths.

By the way, the white clematis blossom does look spectacular, even though lonely, in the nandina.
