mrs. cholmondeley or ramona?

I need to get two "blue" clematis - one to go with a Niobe, and one with a Warsaw Nike. H.F. Young is out. I have three already - love them, but want to try something else, preferably that will have a longer bloom period.

My thought right now is to get a Mrs. C to go with the Warsaw Nike, and a Ramona to go with the Niobe. Is this a good plan? I don't want something that is prone to wilt. Would prefer a vigorous grower. I have about 16 or so clems, and the only one I'm really unhappy with is Ernest Markham - wilts, grows but doesn't bloom. Definitely don't want something like that.

Oh yeah - and if anyone has any experience with Chalcedony...I'm very tempted by that one. Any comments or photos?

I have found my "Ramona" to bloom for a long time and much darker than "Mrs. Chumbley"...I just planted "Chalcedony" ...so, I have no experience with her as of yet to divulge...Jeanne

My 'Ramona' doesn't impress me much. She doesn't bloom very long for me. 'Multi-Blue' and 'Daniel Deronda' are much better performers for me, though they are darker.

Are you familiar with HelpMeFind? If you aren't you should be. Here are the results when you ask its database to query for roses containing the word "Prairie" in their names. I chose that query because I knew it would pull out roses bred by Dr. Griffith Buck. He was a rose breeder in Iowa who had success breeding nice roses that would work in the prairie states of the Midwest. Most of the roses in this query probably aren't what you're looking for, but I think you'll find good candidates even so (for instance, at first glance I thought Prairie Clogger might be something to check out further). Another rose you might want to consider is Golden Wings.

Jeanne...would Leaf Grow (a composted leaf product available in my area) work as compost? I was really asking about the miracle grow for outdoor container plants. I understand that watering them causes the nutrients to wash out of the pot so its a good idead to add a fertilize every few weeks. buyorsell...I garaged mine in a windowless garage and they did great...grew and developed lots of big buds over winter. Someone on here told me it wasn't necessary. Someone else suggested digging a hole and buring the pot in the ground with some sort of mulch on top for insulation. Another person suggested that if I moved them close to my house and covered them with burlap/bubblewrap on the top and outward facing side of the pot, they would stay warm enough. I decided to be safe and bring them in. ;)

I confess to obsessing endlessly about matching up colors for a pleasing effect. I'm gonna stand by that approach even though it's not a hard and fast thing. I just really love it when a plan comes together. I just acquired Ramona myself a few weeks ago (from Brushwood - AWESOME plant!) - and agonized a long time whether to put it with Niobe or Warsaw Nike. Finally settled on Warsaw Nike, and put Mrs. Cholmondeley with Niobe. I have yet to see a bloom on either Ramona or Mrs. C, but I'm conceptually pleased with the effect. I just like to see a "glow" that only comes from certain color combos - not a "pop," but an ethereal "glow. If you're looking for a small-flowered, nodding type, I think Princess Diana would look just excellent. First of all because it's just a great performer, and stunning all by itself. But I have mine with another "blue," H.F. Young, and I love how those look together. It's just all so bright and clear and pure. With Ramona's red anthers, that might look really cool. As far as blooming times, Princess Diana is never out of bloom once it gets going, so you can put it with anything to overlap. Another cool thought is Roguchi, even though it's kind of shy (at least in my garden). The satiny purple tones of Ramona would be so intense with the black swan buds and silky, inky bells of Roguchi. Good luck. For what it's worth, nckvilledude and my husband are right - chances are you can't really go wrong with any two pretty plants.

Menards? I was there this last week & saw both of those for sale, but these are much nicer than the ones you are mentioning. I've seen Violet Charm at HD this year too. I've never seen Mrs C at one of these places til just now. I purchased her last summer from a nursery & she is taken her sweet time waking up this spring. I'm giving her the benefit that my weather has been crappy & her roots are shaded + being new. Although, I do have Candida right next to her (same nursery) that is currently blooming? Next year will be the true test.

How about Mrs. P B Truax? I'm thinking of getting that one and wonder if anyone has experience with it? It says it's periwinkle blue.

I found Mrs C to be pinkier than I had expected.

I have an older Niobe planted about 4 feet away from a newly bought last Summer 2 year old Ramona that was mislabelled Bee's Jubilee. I don't know if they will bloom around the same time this year , but I could imagine the velvety texture of Niobe would be complimented by the almost satiny sheen of Ramona. Ramona didn't bloom for me until October, but did seem to last a while.

Thanks for the input. Marie, that's kind of what I was thinking. I don't mind if the bloom doesn't totally overlap, but I think it would at least part of the time. My Niobe was putting out buds in early March, before the big freeze hit. Same time as the early bloomers. It is now setting a lot of buds again, just a little behind the early ones, which should be going strong for a while yet.

I also had considered Mrs. PB Truax. Would be interested in opinions on that. But, that sheen on Ramona (at least in pics) is really interesting me. And the red stamens.

I'm still taken with Mrs. C - on my wish list for years. Which combo would look better - Mrs. C with Niobe or with Warsaw Nike? I don't have Warsaw Nike yet, but absolutely must have it.
