Moro Blood Orange Getting Big But No Flowers

I have had this Moro blood orange for about two months and it is getting huge! It is putting all of its energy into foliage which is awesome but I would love it to flower. Will it flower in the summer when the weather heats up?

Not NEARLY enough information for informative, helpful responses.

Is it inside or outside? What size container, what kind of soil, what fertilizer routine, etc.?

Moros can tend to alternate bear, so just be extremely thankful you have a tree that will have a sufficient canopy to support plenty of fruit once you get blossoms. Patience is in order. Nice smiley face.

I assume this tree is in a pot. If the tree is in fact rootbound you should re-pot it. Carefully remove the root ball from the pot to inspect it and see if it is rootbound. If it is you should transplant it into a bigger pot, but do not choose a pot that is MUCH bigger than the current pot. Also, if it is rootbound you may want to prune the roots back a little bit. This often restores some vigor into the plant. Of course, there are other reasons why a citrus would not be growing: not enough sun exposure, lack of fertilizer, over/under watering, etc. Hope this helps. -Brett

Take a paper/plastic cup and punch a small hole in the bottom. Fill it with your mix and then put your finger over the hole while you fill with water. Remove your finger from the hole and leave it to drain. The perched water will remain. You can see it if you have used a clear plastic cup. Insert a toothpick into the hole. The perched water will drain out. The toothpick acts as a wick and will demonstrate why you generally need a wick in anything other than gritty mix. This test will show you how much perched water your mix retains but bear in mind it will hold more over time as the mix degrades. Organic mixes will degrade faster. I use a mix similar to the one you are considering in pots that I expect to last a year or so before re-potting or planting. Just buy a rayon mop and use a few strands to make a wick. Tie a knot to keep it from falling through the screen that you use over the drain hole. I put about 4" of mix in the bottom while holding the wick vertically. You can find pictures in Al's thread on water movement in container soils, which you should read carefully. It has lots of great info but bear in mind they are mostly talking about wetter parts of the country. If you buy the typical nursery citrus in heavy organic mix, I would remove all the loose parts. After setting the loosened rootball on the mix and confirming planting height, I usually add a bit of mix at a time and use the Dramm Water Breaker nozzle on my hose to gently loosen the roots and let the nursery mix and the new planting mix combine. You want to avoid any sharp changes in potting mix. This is the opposite of just plopping the plant in the pot and filling it up with planting mix. Thank you, everyone, for the advice! I hoped to be able to say I'd gotten the iron chelate by the time I responded, but my schedule hasn't allowed a trip to the store yet.. I'll give the iron chelate a try and update! Josh, I'm watering with a capful of Foliage Pro (cap is from the 32-oz jug) diluted in my 1.6 gallon watering can. I should probably work out the tsp/gal to be more precise... And I wanted to say that there's new growth on almost all of the tips now! Apparently one of the branches was just way ahead of the others. Gardening is definitely teaching me patience. Thanks again to all!

Thanks Tom. I have too many trees to keep the grass back on all of them by hand and I don't want to use a herbicide so....I just pitch in when I can and let them duke it out until they ultimately shade out the grass. My trees grow slower but I also have more time to play with a wood lathe, remodel my house, play mandolin, keep my car running, and go fishing! I have a neighbor who had a commercial Satsuma orchard that she bulldozed several years ago after a hard freeze. My Satsuma trees survived with practically no damage....maybe it was luck, soil, or exposure differences....or maybe smaller growth rings and a more organic approach leads to a more hardy tree. It's a good point though Tom.....I just don't make the time and I find ways to rationalize it!

It is in a plastic pot in regular potting soil at the moment because it was shipped to me with its roots in a bag with just a little dirt. I had to put it in something quickly so I used what was on hand. Luckily the pot is too small for it so it really guzzles the water so I am not having to worry about the soil staying too wet. It is going into a 16" clay pot with orchid bark, vermiculite and some regular potting soil very soon.

I have only had the tree since February 15th of this year so I do not have it on a strict fertilizer routine yet.When I first got it I used vitamin B1 root starter transplant fertilizer since it had spent almost 5 days crossing the country to get here and was looking pretty ill. That really perked it up so I used it the next time I watered as well. Since then, I have been using miracle grow 20-20-20 around every 2-3 weeks but used 30-10-10 last week instead.

It is kept in front of a southeast window but for the last two weeks it has been mainly outside with my other two citrus trees.

Thanks for the encouragement. :-) I would like it to flower at some point but I do not want it to flower indoors when I bring it in this autumn (which is why I was hoping it may flower this summer.) I found out that me and some of my other family members are severely allergic to citrus blossoms when my clementine tree's flowers started to open. They make me and my other family members with asthma have asthma attacks. My mom, who doesn't even have asthma, starts to cough and wheeze when she smells them because the scent was so strong. :-/ ( I wish I would have known this before I ordered my trees. )

What I did to get rid of the flowers was I pulled most of the blossoms off, but left some of the ones that were about to open on the tree. I then removed the flower petals as well as the anthers and filaments from these remaining flowers. I also did this with my satsuma tree when it flowered as well. I just would hate to have to do this with my orange tree since it would be nice for us to have the tree flower outdoors where we could enjoy the flowers and still be able to breathe.
