Loropetalum: can it take full southern sun?

We've got to do some re-arranging in front of our house which is full south facing. I have a few ruby loropetalum hidden away in the outer garden and I'd like to bring one inside the fence. (Deer eat them, so the ones outside the fence are practically buried behind other shrubs and ornamental grasses.)

So...can the loropetalum take the all day sun?

I have two that get full sun 3/4 of the day and my husband had to trim them today for the 3rd time this year - they are growing great - I have two in the woods that I have limbed up to be trees - most of the growth is on the sunny side. To answer your question I would say yes......

Yes, definitely yes. Mine get full sun and I'm further south than you.

Thissime, that's always a problem in pickling around here. You might ask what to do on the harvest forum. I would think you could use dehydrated dill quite well, growing it earlier and than drying it. I've used the dill heads/seeds since I let it bolt.if you shade it it will bolt in May-June, maybe later if you plant it late.

"Is it reasonable to assume that they are a bit more vulnerable to the sun, since they were newly transplanted, compared to being established and growing in the ground for a while?" Yes (ALL plants would be),, once they are established (they say, no transplant is "established" until after the THIRD season), they can deal with more sun. I would avoid direct, midday sun. They HATE hot weather at night which is why they are problematic in the Southeast. I just happen to have a nice, shaded, relatively cool, moister microclimate that that I planted them in. I have the Fargesia on one property line and Black Bamboo on the other side. The runners love the full sun and grow fast and want to create a grove--fast. (Currently inhabited by a herd of deer no less.) The Fargesia provide a much calmer, more manicured look--and, as of yet, no pandas. :) Good luck. PS, This is really not a good time to transplant--though, I'm guilty of that myself. If you decide to move them for any reason, wait until the Fall or Spring--though, in your area--Winter, is also fine!

Please advise on brugs that can take full sun!

onesimus, if you looked at our site and saw all the water, this happens more and more due to the density and directing down spouts back into the ground even with several french drains in this area. With that stated this is important to know your water table due to Brug roots hate to stay really wet. We lost half the collection that year due to the water problems. We have been working on the circle garden and it's 2 foot above and hope that is safe due to that is what we designed the back yard for, DH wants his driveway back. We have also raised the south portion and have planted hostas so we hope they will do okay, we then will lace the shade lover Brugs in there this year if the fence issue get resolved. With the fence down we find the brugs tipped over so we are in a holding pattern right now, besides the screwy weather. onesimus, we mix half clay and half good soil for the bottom 1/3 of the pot, then next half we add sand to the that mix and the top is all good potting soil. That way they have a good base and we always have to add lime & compost due to the clay. Thank you gee8ch, there is a lot to see. Just wish you were closer.

Are there any hanging basket ferns that can take full sun?

They are called ferns but they don't have the lush leaves that most fern have, but asparagus ferns are wonderful in the full sun, I have one as a house plant sitting in front of west facing window soaking up sun for a full 5 hours a day, I water it every other day, they need a lot of water. If the needles start to turn brown they drop off and it is telling you it needs more water. I water mine with water left from steaming my vegs, it loves it. Mine sits in a iron stand that is about 4' tall and the fern hangs about 6" off the floor, it is so full you can't even see the pot it is in. They have tuber like things just above the surface of the soil as well as in the soil, these hold the water.They look like transparent garlic cloves. You can usually find these plants in the garden nurseries this time of year, as a lot of folks grow them in pots with flowers as a filler. Then bring it in the fall and you will have a nice house plant, if you keep it in the full sun and give it a lot of water.

Great! I love loropetalum but haven't been able to enjoy mine because of the deer striping the branches. I just checked the ones that I have hidden from the deer and they are blooming for the first time since they were planted in fall 2005.

I want to combine 'Ruby Star' echinacea and pink muhly with the loropetalum. The stone used on our house is a PA Bluestone that is called 'lilac heather' and the burgundy/deep pink colors work well with it. These will have our stone chimney in the background and I'll keep the Indian Hawthornes and Robert Poore phlox next to the chimney. We're going to pull a weeping cherry that gets eaten by JBs and is always full of wasps.

Cameron, I have lorapetalum in both dappled to deep shade and blazing, relentless full afternoon sun and they're all very happy. Go for it!

I didn't realize they were on the deer menu - guess I've been very lucky as my front yard plants (unfenced) have never been touched and my neighborhood is a regular Bambi hostel. Knocking on wood .....
