Clem w/ Climbing rose - how close?

This is the weekend I'm driving up to Chalk Hill to get my new clematis (what's the plural of clematis ??). I will be planting them with climbing roses. How close to the base of the rose can I plant?

I'm moving Darlow's Enigma to a new spot - can I dig the really big hole and put the rose on one side and the clem on the other side of the hole?

The other two roses are long established - New Dawn and Polka - I want to plant close enough to the base of the rose so they are climbing through it, but not so close to create root problems for either the clematis or the rose...

Thanks for your help. I'm learning a lot from hanging out on this forum!

I like to plant my clematis at the 'drip line' which is about 2 feet or more for a potted rose. This gives the rose and clematis roots some separation, but the clematis can easily climb. If the rose is small, a bamboo stick can guide the clematis temporarily.

Bettyn, I have New Dawn, Darlow's, Crepuscule, Jaune Desprez, Parade, Awakening, Fields of the Wood, and a few other climbers with clematis growing through them. On the estabished (large roses, all of them), I went about 2-3 feet from the 'main cane' of the climber and in the case of Crepuscule I actually planted the clematis up under it last spring and by this spring, it is all the way to the top and blooming all through it. I have 3 clematis in New Dawn and one is planted as far as 5 feet away from her base but her canes were long so the clematis found it quickly and was at the top in a season or two. The other two are planted within 2-3 of her as I planted them very early on (10 years ago, LOL).

MOVING DARLOW'S ENIGMA. No, I would not plant them in the same hole. I would do two holes about 2-3 feet apart. You might have a problem with one or the other and not want to disturb the root system of one. That is probably not going to be the case, but just in case and I am basing this on what a friend told me yesterday.

She wanted to move her White Dawn to the center of the garden but when she planted it, she put a Niobe in the hole with it and she was afraid she would kill Niobe and she did not want to do that because she wanted to make a "semi-wall" with Niobe where it was with some other clematis.

That might/might not be a problem for anyone else but thought I would bring it up since she just asked me about that yesterday when I was looking at her garden.

I'm taking license and guessing what paving does to the left off the picture. What I'm trying to illustrate in the sketch is placing the two cherry laurels, balanced (and centered as a group) in the bed space created by the paving. A plan view that accurately shows the pipe location would be useful. If the irrigation pipe is still exposed as shown in the picture, I'd move it as necessary... rather than plant the most major component of the landscape unbalanced and off center. If the pipe can't be moved then I'd try to fudge things as close to correct as I could get them. Can't see how the pipe lies in plan view, but c. laurels might work out in front of it. (Would need to see plan view to know.) Keep in mind that these plants are trees & will get big, unless you keep them rigorously sheared. If you don't, you'll need to limb them up to keep them from eating up the patio space. If they're limbed up as they grow so canopy is overhead, they could be closer to the walk without being in the way. Unless you plan to let the Lady Banks heap over the top edge of the fence, I can't really see how it's going to fit in that spot. It's a big, huge heaping thing. Think half the size of a car.

Grnthumber- I have never purchased anything through Ebay, and doing so seems like a gamble to me. What assurance do you have that you will get the item you ordered and that it will be in good shape? Jeri- thank you so much for the pic! Looking at Reve d'Or on HMF it was impossible to tell if the rose was yellowish, pink, or apricot- and I do NOT want pink. Robert- ah, yes, the trellis question that I agonized over, well, I settled on a plan from a book- 4 x 4's w/ copper pipe in a ladder-type style. That ought to support just about anything! And I will set the 4 x 4s in concrete (I just have to avoid the drain line that runs through there somewhere). There are still some uncertainties- given the roses' height, the trellis should be 8 ft tall (if 4 x 4s come in 10 ft lengths), I guess I tie the canes to the trellis in a graceful horizontal? I have never had a climbing rose and I do not know anyone who does (except my 2 neighbors that I gave my 2 free Altissimo's to- and they are still babies). I guess Altissimo will be the other rose on the trellis. I hope it will be long enough for 4 roses. The plan is prepare the bed first, buy the roses (next wk.), then build the trellis (a winter job for sure). Brandy

Of your narrowed-down list, for me Huldine is the most prolific, with small blooms. Alabast has the largest blooms and blooms twice a year for me. Gillian Blades and Claire de Lune are similar here. They both have a slightly, slightly purplish tinge at the edges. Gillian blooms early for me, and Claire de Lune a little later in the year. Wada's Primrose has a beautiful flower but doesn't bloom much for me. Lanuginosa Candida was lovely, but died from too much shade, I think. Henryi has been a real surprise. I had to try 3 or 4 times with various plants of him, but the one I have now has grown like it's on steriods and has been blooming non-stop for months now. Miss Bateman has been a disappointment so far, and Duchess of Edinburgh is lovely, but pretty fleeting for me.

If I wanted to put a trellis on either side of this Sally Holmes climbing rose, would be some good companion plants? Maybe different Clematis on each side, growing to about 15 feet high? What other climbing vines would look good against the white Sally Holmes rose?
