Weed or Exotic Somethingorother?

I have a slew of these alienesque plants growing in bunches in my front and back yard, mostly in shady areas. They have long green stalks, and clusters of red and orange berries at the top -- they remind me of a corn-dog on a stick, but colorful. My husband and I aren't sure if they are something we should be happy to have, or something we should be rapidly pulling up -- they're so alien looking, we just aren't sure! I'd attach a photo but I don't know how to do that here... Any clues, anyone?

It sounds like Italian Arum (see the link below). They're cool plants. Plant Delights in Raliegh has them all over the place in the gardens there. If you have too many, remember me when the Fall Swap comes around - I'd love to have a couple.

Are these areas in your yard damp? If these plants aren't arum, they may be jack-in-the-pulpit.

pinus strobus.. white pine.. grow like weeds in MI .... and are VERY CHEAP ... no need to go to goldner welsh and pay real money for the things.. i got one gal one foot strobus at wally world a few years back for $1.99 ... and cut them down less than 5 years later when they were 15 feet tall ... once established.. they can grow 3 to 5 feet per year ... nothing to be planted close to the house mind you ... as you trabvel north on 75 .. you see them lining the highways... by the billions .... besides those listed above .... exotic is a function of budget.. then zone ... if you are in the bloomfield i think you are in .... a day trip to gee tree farm north of jackson state prison.. including a couple hours in their arboretum .. would be time well spent .... they offer a couple thousand variations on the theme of conifers ... and run the gambit on what exotic stuff can be grown in MI ... good luck ken ps: please define what exotic means to you .... those listed in the previous post.. are plain old green plants .. that fit your fact scenario .... but i define exotic as anything but green.. including multi-colored plants ...

amany, Thank you for your compliments. To be honest, I just bought those pandas about a month ago. I went to two separate Lowes and bought about 6 different 2.5 inch pots that had 2-3 pandas in each pot and I put them all together in a 4 inch pot. I really like how it turned out too. In overview 3, I am not sure which one you are referring to when you said "middle sans," but I am guessing you mean the darkish green colored one (not the larger one on the left of that tiny plant in the middle, but on the right)? I am not sure what type of sans that is to be honest. If you look at it by standing over it and looking down at it, it is all darkish green in color and you can only see some whitish bands if you look at the sides of it. When I say whitish bands, I mean almost a ghostish bands as they are almost invisible, but just white enough you can see them. This is only present on a couple of the leaves. That weird white "u" thing you see is just a scar, I have no idea how it got here or why it looks like a "u," but I guess that just makes it unique lol. The one on the left in "overview 3" is a birds nest sanserveria. I found it at a local Lowes. I bought myself a Sansevieria Laurentii today at HD, I didn't see this one before, I guess I didn't loo hard enough. They've had a few of these for weeks now but I said ah well, I'll look at all of them today and see if I can't find a decent one. I found one that has some scaring, but really good overall.... nothing like those moonshines we see *cries* lol. It has 4 new babies on it, such beauties. Elizabeth

Artie What about Native Plumbago (Plumbago zeylanica). It's native here as well as in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. I've come across references to "white or blue flowers" but have only seen the white. I'd be interested to know whether there are blue versions in anyone's gardens. The plant is variable, but is more ground-cover-ish than the introduced plant. There's also: Cinnamomum oliveri - our answer to the Camphor laurel, Cinnamomum camphora. Celtis australis - surely better than Celtis sinensis. Aphananthe philippensis, Native Elm -different Generic name, but definitely in the Ulmaceae, and a truly lovely little tree. There's a native poppy, too -forget its name, but it's a little annual and an interesting shade of orange - Papaver something. Native Daffodils (Calostemma luteum and C. purpurea) are very good value, being bulbs which flower at Christmastime. They're closely related to the introduced plant (and just as poisonous. Don't let the kiddies eat them). There are plenty of native Hibiscus, including the lovely "Barambah Creek" if you can't be bothered with prickles. Native Capers - Capparis species - have lovely perfumed flowers and always come with a horde of dancing butterflies. Slow growing and prickly, though. (Good for birds, of course, especially blue-wrens, which, amazingly considering their size, love to eat the "Caper White" butterflies.) There are some very good minature versions of Callitris, the native cypress, some of which must like your area? Native orchids? There are a lot of these. Best of luck with the project. Trish

This is called "Yuzu". It can survive down to 10 degrees. Very interesting fragrance, like Marmalade Orange, a very fragrant lemon, maybe 25% grapefruit, and sometimes a tropical nuance of guava. The smell is "deep" and pungent, and a bit spicy. Best way I can describe the unique fragrance to you. In Japan they traditionally floated them in bath tubs, the fruits are so aromatic. I've seen yuzu-scented incense sticks sold in China towns. Very few citrus can survive that low of a temperature over the Winter, but I find yuzu is very resilient at bounching back and vigorous growing. The tree also produces 3-inch long thorns (not kidding!). I have a great recipe for Yuzu blueberry muffins. I think I have two dozen other ultra-rare citrus varieties virtually no one knows about, just sharing with you one of them.

Thanks to you both for the useful hints! Catc, you are correct as they are without a doubt Italian Arum. We have it growing everywhere -- in the front, in the wooded area of our backyard, along the driveway... -- so I'd be glad to swap some. I do need to get involved with this group more so that I can do the fall swap. How does that work, exactly?

The great thing about our new house is that the previous owners, who were 85 when they sold us the house this spring, spent so much time on gardening, and planted so many wonderful things that bloom all year. It seems that every time I turn around, something is blooming that I never noticed before. Case-in-point are the gardenia bushes all along the front of the house, which continue to bloom and provide wonderful smells. And to think I considered taking them out!

I'm relatively new here myself, and I've only been to one swap, so I'm probably not the best person to fill you in, but the general idea is that we all show up at a pre-arranged location with our plants, put them on a table and then John gives the signal and everyone grabs a plant. Rinse, lather, repeat, until all the plants are gone. It's lots of fun. People also do one-on-one swaps for more valuable plants. Keep an eye peeled as we get closer to Fall. Someone will probably start a thread about where and when the swap will be

Lucky you, 'inheriting' a yard from a dedicated gardener - it sounds like you have some great stuff. My yard is nicely laid out, but a lot of what was there when I moved in is kinda boring. I've been working on getting some more interesting plants established.

I believe I read that the fall swap will be mid-September. John would know - as he is the one who sets it up. Sometime in August someone will post pre-arranged requests in the Exchange sub-forum (under this forum). I 2nd the motion of bringing the Italian Arum to the swap -- I'd LOVE to have some!!!

Looks like the conversation has just begun on the dates for the fall swap -- just saw it tentatively posted as September 15. If I'm able to attend, will most certainly bring along the Italian Arum!
