Remove Bud On Young Plant?

My Rhapsody is beginning its second season. It is tiny following its hard prune. It did not bloom in year one. I was surprised to see a bud forming on a plant less than 12 inches long. Will this early flower slow growth?

Yes. You are right. I bought this clematis at a local nursery because the picture of the rich blue bloom was irresistible. I want to see one live! But it seems that the plant is too small to expend so much energy on this early bloom.

Harry, I had a Sputnik plant that I purchased and planted last fall from Dan at Brushwood Nursery. The plant came in a quart sized pot. This spring the plant put out one bloom down low on the plant and the overall height of the plant when it put out its bloom was one foot tall or so. I allowed the flower to develop and then picked it to enjoy inside the house. The plant has since then shot up and grown up to three feet tall and already has more flower buds forming.

In my experience, once the plant has expended the energy to develop the bud, why not enjoy it. The plant will spend far more energy allowing the flower, if it is fertilized, to go to seed. I would personally enjoy the bloom either on the plant and then pinch any developing seedhead off or pick the flower and enjoy it in your house.

If my plant had vigorous foliage like yours, I would be less worried. But I like your advice. Do clematis blooms last in a vase? Never thought of that. Your picture is beautiful.

Thanks for your support - it's nice to know there are other "nippers" out there and I'm not the only mean old nippstress! And it's good to hear of the flip side, Jaxondel, about why a bloom or two here and there may be a good thing. Nearly all my bands from Vintage and Rogue Valley this year came with buds or blooms on them, and I do admit to pinching off all but one of them to see the blooms. Not that either of those vendors has ever sent a wrong rose, but it's nice to see the blooms in real life. Rene - nice to know you appreciate my little whine. I appreciate the official permission from Kim and MIchael to let the occasional bloom sneak by without too much guilt. With all those roses it's bound to happen anyway, so I might as well enjoy it when I slip up. Still, I expect all the rest of you rose nippsters and nippstresses to be out there being ruthless and singing that ol' Monkees (or Smashmouth) song - yeah, I'm a Believer!! Remove figs from a very young plant/tree?

You don't need to remove the figs from the tree. You should be able to enjoy some fig crop in your zone this year. Just keep these in the sunny location and provide the provisions as required (watering and fertilizing). Watch for potting up to a bigger pot when needed as the root mass becomes big fot the pot.

I always love when someone brings this topic up because I get to tell my favorite removing buds story: A few summers ago a woman here at work couldn't understand when the rest of us were complaining about having tomtoes coming out of our ears because she had NONE. We asked her what she was doing... "Well, I bought the plant at Lowes," she replied "And I'm doing everything the guy told me to do. I water in the morning. I pick off any bugs. And I've been crazily picking off the buds and flowers, just like he told me... I just don't know WHY I'm not getting any tomatoes!!" Needless to say we nearly died trying to contain ourselves. No buds = no tomatoes :) I personally don't remove any buds. I don't prune. I don't fertilize. I don't remove suckers. Even though I seem to do everything (eh-hum) wrong I still get tomatoes. (I'm not a lazy gardener, I'm not a lazy gardener, I'm not a lazy gardener) They seem to thrive on neglect... Oh alright and it could be because I'm a little lazy... Good luck - Hopefully you'll hear from someone who isn't so (eh-hum) LAZY!

Removing buds on young citrus plant?

Leave the buds on and let them develop into small fruit. At that point, you can pinch the baby fruit off. If you keep removing the buds before they develop into fruits, the tree will continue to create more flower buds to replace the ones you removed.

I would let it bloom. There is no harm in it. I would cut off the spent bloom and not let it go to seed.

I bought a one gallon sized Rhapsody yesterday. It is only 12" tall but has about 8 stems and about 6 blooms on it. They are a different mauvey purple. Had to have it.

Harry some clematis blooms last quite a while and others fade quickly but it has never stopped me from picking more to replace the ones that fade too fast!

I will always leave the first bud to flower, to be more certain that it is not mislabeled, I got a 4 inch pot of "Ruutel" 2 years ago that bloomed pink. Not exactly sure what kind it is, but it is very healthy, still pale pink last year. My second 4 inch pot of "Ruutel" bought last year really is.

Even a reputable nursery can make mistakes. Last summer on sale I bought a 2 year old unlabeled one, except for a sticky l on the pot saying Bee's Jubilee. But when it finally bloomed in October it was another Ramona. They offered to exchange it or give me a credit because they didn't have any more BJs & weren't planning to reorder. But it looked so good I was satisfied with it.

I hadn't pinched any of my young plants/buds before, but this year I am going to try it.
