Varied growth rate on Prince Charles

My Prince Charles was planted 2 years ago. This winter it produced a new vine from the ground which quickly shot nearly to the top of the trellis in about 2 months. However, the rest of the buds on the older vines are taking a long time to grow, but they are still green and looking OK. Also on the old vines are clumps of leaves at some of the nodes, but there is no rapid growth on the old vines like there is on the new one. True, this is a new one and maybe new ones grow faster. But I'm perplexed at the very different rates of growth shown on the different vines.

Is this typical? I'm not worried, just trying to learn the typical patterns of Clematis.
