Is Charles de Gaulle worth 13 USD?

rosaceae

So, this is my first post on the forum! hi, everyone!

I saw labeled roses at HEB (of all places,
huh?), not a common sight in Mexico. Most sold here are unlabeled HTs and minis.

It’s only 4
varieties, all Meillands: Edith Piaf, some yellow that interested me so little
I don’t even remember it, Julio Iglesias, and my eyes sparkled as I read: CHARLES DE GAULLE.

I've been drooling at pictures of this
rose for quite some time now. The price is 200 MXN, roughly 13 USD, which I
think is pretty excellent a price, (compared to online 20-something USD +
shipping deals and the possibility of arriving dead or being confiscated at
the border). Nice basal growth, about 5 green pencil length canes, a bit
thicker than an actual pencil, most pushing new growth, all green, nice. In 5-gallon
pots with regular soil, grafted.

I think it’s worth it, but I would like to know the opinion of those who have grown it before. What
was your experience? Give me a VERY detailed description of this rose, tell me
stuff that is not on HMF, or that you don’t see in pictures. For example:

  • How long does it
take to establish into a full bush?
  • How long do flowers last on the bush? Cut?
  • Is it a good seed/pollen parent?
  • What about diseases?
  • What did you like about it?/ What did you not?/ Your overall rating?
  • How pink does it get and in which weather conditions? In what conditions is it actually lavender?
  • How “thornless or nearly so” is it really? The basal canes it had looked bloodthirsty!
  • Would it thrive in a large pot?

It says on HMF that it is
heat tolerant, does this mean the blooms keep their color, shape, scent, in
full sun?, I mean full-on sun, in an arid climate, with winters that tops may
reach -5°C (23°F). The weather is very similar to south Texas', since I am in North East Mexico, hours below Tx. Scorching, arid, few to no rains in summer, sparse
but heavy the rest of the year. Tell me anything you think may be important to know.
Are the other varieties attention worthy, performance-wise?

Any help is much appreciated! Thank you very much!
