Orange trees that i grew from seeds from store bought fruit.
Comments (47)Which varieties of citrus do best for own-root, grown from seed? I think there's something to be said for being natural. And I refuse to believe it is absolutely impossible to grow any type of decent citrus fruit without having to use grafting. Edit: Another discussion in this forum says that many citrus varieties can be grown own-root, but some maybe less sweet, and the roots require more frequent irrigation and are more vulnerable to disease. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/citrus/msg012036217931.html And for some citrus varieties, the fruit resulting from the seedlings may be significantly different from the parent. It's all luck of the draw with the genes, and once the breeders found a winner they simply resorted to clonal propagation. For planting citrus seeds, one of the really helpful things is to carefully peel off the slimy covering over the seed, it helps the seed begin to grow much sooner, otherwise it takes time for this protective layer to rot away in the soil. Comments (4)I love this little rose. Up here she's bullet proof re disease and hardy. I grow her in a pot but used to have her planted in the garden (needed to make room, and figured since she's so small she'd be a good pot candidate). In the garden she was planted next to lavender - the combo of the bluish purple lavender with her bright orange was great. Sue...See MoreBest online store to buy from? Comments (14)Is there really a "bad" seed company? I haven't heard of one. I tend to buy from different ones. This year, I think I ordered most from TGS and last year it was Totally Tomatoes. No offense to Totally Tomatoes but I'm one of those random buyers. I order some of my other seeds from Johnny's (or on occasion Park's or Burpee's). I think I decided upon TGS this year because they had a lot of great eggplant varieties I wanted along with the tomatoes I wanted so I could do most of it in one order. For me, choosing between companies, is pretty random. However, I do really like receiving a catalog right before xmas. I usually have to take a long flight to go back home for the xmas holidays, and reading the seed catalogs are my #1 thing to do on an airplane. That's the time to relax and dog-ear the pages....See MoreWhat did you buy this week at the grocery stores/stores
Comments (22)I still had lots of food in the house, but DH told me to go ahead and stock up since he'll probably be on the road for 5-6 weeks this time and the immediate future of our para-transit sytem is iffy at best right now due to budget cuts. (We won't know its fate until March 19. On the 22nd, we'll either have it or it's immediately gone.) So, hey, I'm no dummy. I stocked up. Trader Joes - greek yogurt eggs Cheddar cheese bacon almonds frozen haibut frozen green beans frozen mixed veggies frozen mixed peppers frozen naan butter canned diced tomatos quinoa mustard Regular Grocery Store bread Tortillas raisins black beans lentils canned tuna (my lucky day - albacore at .79 a can!) 5# chicken breasts (on sale at .99 a pound!) 2# pork bag of baking potaotes 2 cucumbers 3 onions 2 gree peppers # asparagas quart strawberries 1/2 gal milk canned mixed fruit # bananas # mushrooms garlic limes flour olive oil freezer bags pinto beans # coffee 2 boxes tea bags On the clearance shelf, we found organic pommegranate juice, V8, cherry juice and peanuts for $1.00 eash. The store isn't going to carry them anymore. So we got two each of those. And I had coupons for two free bottles of laundry soap that expire at the end of the month, so I got those now. Total - too much. OTOH, I'm set for another 4-5 weeks except highly perishable items like lettuce or milk. (Althogh I have some canned milk if I really need it.) That doesn't include the things we get for DH to take on the road as I consider his road supplies separate from my grocery budget....See Morebada_bing
