How long does it take for a bud to open?

I am a first time Brug grower. I bought two on eBay, planted them both in a very large container, one lived & thrived & the other died almost immediately. I have what I think are buds, but the largest one has been doing nothing for about a week. I'm used to Moonflowers that bloom overnight & die. My question is, how long should it take for this bloom to open & how long will it usually last? I also have several other tiny blooms. These are so different & fascinating! I want to see that bloom open!!! It is in a bay window on the North side of the house. Is that a good spot? Thank you ahead of time for any answers you guys might have.

It can take 2 weeks or more sometimes from the time you first see it until it opens. Is there any way you could put it in brighter light, say a southern exposure? Depending on the variety, a bloom could last a couple of days to a week. Mainly opening in the evening and semi closing during the day (again depends on variety). Scent is always in the evening. It took mine almost a month here in OK.

I posted this same question on Sept. 16 & I have flowers today.

Folks: Be patient and enjoy the zen of buds. Enjoy the anticipation. You're on orchid time. You know the faster they are open, the sooner you can be looking forward to them wilting and browning and falling off. While the full bloom is awesome to behold, the process of opening is too. When my DH's Stanhopea is in bud, I enjoy watching the progess, the form as it develops and passes through odd forms resembling a toucan beak, etc. and finally the bizaar humming bird finale. Since we can't see the plant, probably won't be much good advice in that area. However, from my experience with paphs, they take awhile to open. If it's not getting enough sun, it'll take longer, but I probably wouldn't move it to higher light before it blooms, just to be on the safe side. Your phals and dend look pretty happy, too. :)

I'm totally with pitimpinai... Home Depot is notorious for "mislabeling" the appropriate growing place for many plants and shrubs. You may be able to get them to bloom in doors, but because the buds are so tight, my worry is that without enough light and water, the buds may dry and drop. Lilies that are sold as "house plants" are usually sold in bloom and treated like a bouquet of flowers. This time of year, these were probably being forced in a green house to bloom for Thanksgiving and are blooming a mite early. You don't indicate your hardiness zone or location. If you are in an area where it's still "autumn", warm days and cool evenings but still in the 50's at night and you can put it outside, even in the pot, you might have better luck but getting it into the ground would be the best. Of course, if you are having winter frosts and cold nights, that is not an option. In that case, I would do the best you can to provide as much light as possible, water, and after it (hopefully) blooms for you, if you like the color, save the bulb and plant it in the yard in the spring.

Okay I'm doing most of it right I'm using a tablespoon of epsom salts and spray it in the morning and one my trees is responding like my clay soil in my flowerpot must have been magnesium deficient

Thanks you guys. I guess I'm just impatient.The one bloom is so big, it just seems like it should be open. I don't really have a better place to put it. The bay window seems to let in enough light, or at least as much as my Southern windows. My cat would knock it out of the other windows. I also like looking at it when I'm in my recliner, resting. Next year, it will go up the mountain to the Dragonroost! I've been so preoccupied with other things, moving, hurricanes, etc., that I haven't had much time or energy to garden this year. Next year will be WONDERFUL!!!!

I became addicted to them from right here on GW 3 years ago. Last year I started one from seed, fought spider mites after I took it 35 miles to over-winter where I worked, brought it back home this spring and in August it bloomed, talk about patience. It was a dainty baby pink and I felt like I should hand out cigars or something. Thanks for sharing your excitement, Congrats! (How do you keep those lovely fingernails?) I've deducted that it takes toooo long, but oh so worth the wait.

Hey Bonnie, I'm with you! Think I'll get some candy cigars & hand them out when the bud opens. I don't even know the name of my Brug or what color it will be. Guess I just like to be surprised. It's actually somewhere in my files,(the name), but can't find much of anything since the move. As for fingernails, I have none! Don't know how anyone gets their work done with pretty fingernails!
