Anyone tried Florida Sieboldii in zone 5?

I was in a Garden Center last week and they had Florida Sieboldii which suprised me since I did not think it would be hardy in zone 5.I also have read that it is a rather difficult one so wonder if anyone has had experience with it. It was a nice size in a gallon pot and only $ 8.95 so it would not be high dollar if didn't survive. Just the work.

What to you think?

I was surprised about that last year, too, but I bought one anyway to give it a try and I'm pretty sure it's alive this year. I just looked at all my new ones yesterday and if I'm remembering correctly, this one's starting to swell. I'll doublecheck a little later today, but I think it's a thumbs up. It certainly is beautiful.

Lois, I know of several people who grow F. Sieboldii in zone 5 and it survives fine in their zone. Planting it in a protected area and mulching it well in the winter may help to protect the plant. For such a cheap price, I would give it a whirl and see what happens. In my garden,the plant wilted two years in a row right as it was getting ready to bloom. Due to this aspect of the plant, it was removed from my garden.

mikeandbarb - I'm in the DFW area too, and I'm finding that clematis do well here, despite the heat. I always plant them to grow up through a rose or shrub, or make sure to plant something in front of them to shade the roots. Right now, HD & Lowe's have lots of small pots of clematis, which are the ones I currently have that I bought last year. I just placed an order from Silver Star Nursery for four more. Carol

How hardy are florida Sieboldii and montana Mayleen?

Clematis don't do well as houseplants. I have a Florida Sieboldii that is in a large pot and keep it in my unheated garage for the winter. It was moved to a larger pot this spring which set it back but it is blooming now. No special care in the garage over the winter. I set all pots on pieces of wood to keep pots off cement floor. Some people have had success planting this clematis in certain areas of their yards with micro-climates that allow it to survive in our colder zones. I may buy another plant and try that next year. Have you seen 'Cassis'? It is a dark purple which looks like 'Florida Seiboldi' and is hardy to z:6. Cassis was a new purchase this spring and is potted in a matching pot. It is blooming now. I also have a c. montana rubens that has been overwintered in my garage for several years. It survives but has very limited bloom for me so it will go south with family this fall. I've tried. I'm in zone 10 so I would only expect one year but I haven't found the right light. Too much sun and they die, too little and they don't bloom. I'm still experimenting. Nancy

Smoketree Cotinus coggygria A multi-stemmed small tree that turns a smoky pink color from June through August. Leaves, too, are showy, turning from medium blue-green to yellow-red-purple in the fall. Good choice for a shrub border or other grouping, adaptable to many soils. Grows to 10' to 15', 12' spread. (zones 5-8) The leaves of the Smoketree are browsed by deer and other big game. The Smoketree is a native of Eurasia and has long been a favorite shrub or small tree for garden plantings or along property lines and the borders of landscaped areas. It was introduced into America as early as 1656 and by 1790 was commonly available in nurseries. It is a species with many names including Smokebush, European Smoketree, Cloud tree, Wig tree, Mist tree, and Jupiter's Beard, all of which allude to its spent floral plumes and airy clusters of seeds which give the tree a hazy, blurry, or feathery appearance. Thanks to both of you for your input. It has been too cold and rainy to plant anything this week but maybe I will make a clematis trip next week. Only problem is that it will cost more than $ 8.95 to look. Last time I spent $ 74.00. LOL.

I also think you should give it a try - I grow Florida S and I love her! I live in the Vancouver British Columbia area and we get pretty cold winters here also - what I did this winter was I covered all my tender variety clematis up with a thick bubble wrap - all my tender clems are in pots. I even have a clematis called peppermint which is sopose to be an indoor variety and it made it through the cold winter we had - So If I were you - what the heck - go out and pick one up - I bet she will surprise you!
