Want to see blooms. Is my weather safe or would you not risk it?

I'm getting worried myself. I am impatiently waiting to see some blooms. I've already seen one bloom on the three that I have, but it only produced one bloom, beautiful white one. It was still in a healing stage. As they looked bad when I purchased them. Now it has like 20 buds, already popped open and I am waiting to see them again. I want to see what it looks like with all those open. Yes, almost all 20 are coming right along and should open around the same time it seems.

The other I have not seen, and it also has opened buds on it as well. I want to see what color it is so bad. My 10 day forecast is here:

Tell me what you think. Should I bring them in? Could I bring them in and put them back out? Sunday it might be low 39 degrees and now the weather man is saying possibly 34 degrees Monday. After that the lows are back into the 50's. The 40's scare me, so the 30's really have this NEWBIE in a panic. Remember, they're still in pots.

This is so frustrating. Knowing they're so close. I can't stand the thought of having to wait til next season to see the color of that one, but WILL NOT risk it if you guys say so.

Would bringing them in and back out stress them to much? Should I just go ahead and put them up or the winter? I hate it that I got started so late. :(

I hauled mine in and out of the shed so many times last year...it was not even funny anymore. the did continue to bloom thou :-)

I would rather take the risk of loosing a few from transport...shock...then to a freeze.

Do you have a south side protected area where they might be a little warmer at night? You know you can never trust the weather people either. They can say a low of 34, but you might be in a low lying area or higher area where it goes to 32 and then the trees are a goner. Better safe than sorry, huh? Just be careful of the buds as you haul them around and I found they really hate being near a heat vent blowing on them inside.

Having enjoyed brugs for years, I have had my battles with bugs too. The only material that I use in my home is Ultra Pure Oil, mixed with water at 1 tablespoonful oil to 1/2 gallon of water, for those who make larger amounts, this is 1 liquid ounce to one gallon. I spray it on all parts of the plant with a recycled Windex bottle (trigger spray bottle). The oil is effective on all life stages of mites, eggs to adults, aphids and what ever else might crawl around. Not toxic, it is in a nut shell mineral oil and emulsifiers so that it will mix with water. Works by suffocation, the oil covers the insects, cutting off their air supply. I place the affected plant in my shower stall, spray away, allow to dry overnight, and then wash the shower (the oil can be slippery when wet) the next day. When you properly apply the oil, control will last for 4 to 5 weeks. Of anything you can use, other than plain water, this is the safest for people and pets. No odors, no residues. For plant safety, use below 85 degrees and do not use on blooms. Read and follow the label instructions. Have used this on my brugs indoors for decades. I would NOT use Avid, Floramite, Sanmite or other pesticides inside my home, and I am a professional grower.

Hi Dray, Thanks for asking. Lots going on... started a couple weeks ago when the heat really broke. Let's see. First, the straight line winds have made it hard to tell how big some of the hostas are. And the pics I have from pre-storm don't show a whole lot... So, it's been hard to make decisions about what to move and what not to move. Over the winter, we had taken down a Black Hills Spruce... probably 7-8' at the base. We had to take out the stump and did that last weekend. I elected to move Empress Wu into that spot. Where else in MY garden was I going to have room for a 7' hosta!?!? I mean, right before the storm, she was already 4 1/2 feet. Had I not moved her, I would have had to move 8 other hostas! Ok, with the tree. I'm left with an ugly stump. But it sounds like the neighbors behind me want to remove their part of the tree by next year. So hopefully I'll be able to have that stump ground soon... I HOPE! After all, it's literally straight out from my deck, so it's the first thing I see! I hesitate to move anything in front of it since it'd have to survive the grinding later. This experience has given me the much needed motivation to thin out the overcrowding of this section... and I'm almost done. I gave away several duplicates and lots of seedlings to my neighbor, who was grateful to take them all! And with this thinning out, I've been able to make room for a path that runs thru the length of this section of the garden. I have only 2 more hostas to move to finish that path clearing. I hope to have the step stones done next year. My theory that the hostas would fry this year hasn't really come to fruition. None of them seem too bad. They look like heck from the wind and hail, but so far, I can't tell that they are getting scorched. So, all in all, this situation has left me with a garden that will be better for it. Beanne-What you said about the fireman also makes me think. What about the pet owners who would risk their own lives to save their pet,and as others have mentioned leave family members and children behind and also the beloved pet that they rescued,to have a life without them? What if that person was the only person who really cared about the pet they rescued and are now not there to continue that care? What happens to the pet? Or what if the pet was so totally spoiled by the owner who just died saving it,that nobody else wants it or wants to care for it and the only alternative is a shelter,or more likely euthanasia? Or if the pet mourns itself to death,then the owner's life was lost in vain? Lots of "What if's",huh?

Hi Steve. It really does sound like you are trying to discourage people from growing their own citrus when you say things like: "6b "WAY TO FAR NORTH TO BE GROWING CITRUS" Steve" or "The vast amount of people that grow up north quit after a year or 2 when their trees die." In fact, statements like: " "We" are the small handful of citrus tree growers doing well with few troubles." are completely unfounded. Though I respect your opinion that growing citrus was the hardest experience you've ever had, it certainly wasn't for me. Personally I think that shoot tip micropropagation is complex, but not hard. I think that cultivating mycelium for master cultures is time consuming, but not hard. Basically, I think that all of the things you are saying are hard, are in fact easy with a little knowledge, which is the purpose of offering this guide. I don't think that growing citrus is "expensive, time consuming, and difficult". As a matter of fact as hobbies go, I'd say it can be rather cheap! To be clear that it CAN be rather cheap. If you want to spend a million bucks building a theme-park sized greenhouse then go ahead, but you certainly don't need to. If you want to spend $40 a bag on bark chips for your 5-1-1 mix then you can, but you don't have to. If you want to spend a grand on a fertilizer injector for your irrigation system, again you can but you don't have to. I'm sorry that you feel that this hobby is expensive, but I feel that you can keep you hobby on the very cheap side if you want to. That is to say that I managed to keep everything on the cheap side when tropical plants were not a part of my business and were just a hobby. Just for the sake of clarity, when you say that things are difficult to grow outside of their 'temperature zone', are you considering that every houseplant that you come across is being grown out of it's 'zone'. If what you said were entirely true then I don't think that I could grow the orchids, bromeliads, tree ferns and other wacky things that I do. You could even go so far as to say, that because these species are not native, they don't have anywhere as close to as many naturally occurring pests and therefore are EASIER to grow! I would like to encourage positive discussion, so if anybody would like to start a discussion about this elsewhere, please do. I would however like to hear from people who have something positive to contribute to the production of a citrus care guide, here. Thanks for the imput so far everybody. :)

Yes, haul them in and out or put them in the garage with a grow light and they will keep blooming. Don't trust the weather man. Last year they said low of 39 then at 10pm they said oops its gonna freeze and I lost my wedding band digging in the flower bed in the middle of the night.

I am 80 miles ne of you and we have the same forecast. I am not bringing them in, but I am bringing them up close to the house and garage, in case we have to move 'em in quick!
I am leaving next week for 5 days, to go on a cruise and am debating whether to bring them in before I leave or not. I'll be back on the 26th.................. do I dare? Last year we had an almost three-week early frost. Crossing fingers that not this year!!!

I consider Brugs a form of exercise. Lift, dig, drag, pull... repeat LOL If they're in pots, drag them in especially if it's only one cold night & then warm. I put mine on an unheated porch so I can see them finish blooming. They all waited until the very end of summer to do it. Ludgers Windsong now has 8 open & a few more almost ready.

Oh yeah!This time of year is nerve racking.I've got about 50 brugs in the ground still-probably gonna cut them all down This weekend.But yes-they can say 40F forecast in the morning-and it we get a frost that night!!!I just keep my fingers crossed(and pray!).But yes-in pots they are much easier.Back in the late 90's when I first got brugs my 1st bloom was on a potted brug I had brought in-and it just filled the whole house with that brug scent!!Been hooked ever since.Mark

I looked at your weather forecast for the next few nights, I stand corrected, for some reason youwill be colder than us- and yes, I would bring the potted plants in and out like was suggested, until frost danger is over. You have more warm weather after that so have a good chance of having buds bloom- if you have buds already on your plants.
Since you can only store in your crawl space, that may be an issue for your brugs. Maybe not! Make sure all the leaves are stripped off. Cut above the Y and make sure you include 5-6 nodes on each branch above the Y before you make those cuts. Upper branches dryout/dieback to some extent during the winter.
Someone else will have to advise you about sealing the roots and part of the stems with mulch- I store brugs in my dark, cool basement, and since I sparingly water about once a month during the winter, I have no experience with this crawlspace method.
For my inground brugs, I cut back to 12-15", mulch heavily and remove the mulch in April or May when the soil starts to warm. Altho the brugs have to come back from the ground/roots, most of them do bloom, sometime several flushes, before the first Fall frost.
