Kev, I can't wait for the Fl ban to end..enough is enough..This winter, I talked to two women who own citrus nurseries in Fl...They're so upset the ban has lasted as long as it has..
What the heck is the government doing? I wonder if they've found recent cases of Canker...What other reason would they have? Then again, they're the government..lol
Did anyone read the thread posted this winter..someone bought a citrus tree from Ebay..the seller was located in Fl..Government officials went to the buyers home and confiscated her/his tree.
I wonder what they did to the seller??? He had to know selling citrus out of state was illegal..
I'm also surprised Ebay didn't catch it.
As soon as the ban ends, I'm going to place an order with both nurseries..I hope prices don't esculate too much, though I fear they'll go up in cost and shipping..sigh..

Kev, you're lucky your HD sells citrus..Do they have different varieties? If you don't mind me asking, what do they charge per tree? Toni

Sure no problem...They have Tangerine,Key Lime,Armstrong,Naval Orange,Kumquat,Meyer Lemon,And I think thats it.
My Meyer Lemon tree I bought is about 3 feet tall,in a 3 gallon pot and it was $25.
All of the citrus that I mentioned was $25 for that size.
They had a couple in 10 gallon pots for like $125 :-)

What a deal!!! And all the varieties..I feel like driving to your HD..LOL..

Are they tree shaped (one trunk) or bushy?
25.00 for a 3' tree is quite reasonable..I'm not sure what Armstrong is..what is it? LOL..I'd like another Kumquat so that'd be in my cart for sure. Kumquats, like Meyers, seem to be ever-blooming/fruiting..
My naval orange is okay, fruits, but our season isn't long enough for oranges to fully mature..And for some odd reason my limes do NOT fruit..why is that? I have two key limes, several years old, yet they've never once sent out a lime. Lemons and grapefruit do well..Kumquat's great. My Harido Pummello has a bunch of fruit as of two wks ago, but the question is, will they grow? This is the first time it's fruited since I bought it 2 or 3 yrs ago..
Kev you should try Kumquat..do you know which type it is?
Our HD had citrus one summer back in the early 90's, and occassional half-dead, expensive, 2' bushy Calamondins..So count your blessings..Toni

The "tree" that I got has one main trunk going up almost 2 ft and was pinched out to make 2 main branches that have about 3 to 4 small branches on each.
Not 100% sure about the Armstrong,I do know its orange colored fruit lol
As far as what kind of Kumquat,Im not sure,I will make another trip back soon and will let you know:-)
They looked way better than any other trees there,LOTS of fruit ALL OVER them!!!
I just wanted to start off with the Meyer because I THOUGHT I knew a little bit about how to keep them happy LOL

Meyer's is probably the best tree to start off. The same with Calamondins. Cal's fruit are small, seedy, tart oranges..Unless one is into bitterness, it's best used to make jelly/marmalade..Since its fruit is golfball size, wonder how many fruit you'd need to make a cup of jelly..lol
The two Kumquats I'm familiar with are Meiwa and Nagami..I like Nagami looks better..fruit are oblong, but if eaten, tart..Meiwa have round, sweet fruit..I have a variegated Nagami, and may have a green Meiwa..I need to make a new list of citrus..a few died last year, and one this winter, (Buddha's Hand) so it's time to update.

I dont know how ripe the kumquats where but they were round,so they probably were meiwa.

The only down side to the HD garden center is for someone like me who needs to talk with people that have knowledge about the plants they are selling they arnt very helpful.
The people that Ive talked to there know less than I do,and thats pretty sad lol

Oh yeah..HD hires ppl who could care less about plants, let alone learn to ID and care..
I worked for HD in the 90's..They were so darn unorganized..and worse, w/o compassion.
We got a shipment of Ficus benji's loaded w/scale..I called the manager over, pointed them out..I suggested sending them back or at the least, spraying..he said, ah, don't worry about it..nice attitude, huh?
The only advantage working there was I got first pick of any plant recently shipped..No discounts..even for employees.

HD hires spring/summer ppl to work outdoors, caring/ selling annuals and perrenials..I have to admit, they're pretty knowledable..But no help with tropicals/sux/cacti.

Perhaps you should pick up a Citrus book..This way, when you shop, open the book and read what is required of a certin citrus..Or write types of citrus on paper, read whatever info you can find on the internet..

Let me ask you this...Do you bring in your Meyers if there is going to be a thunderstorm?
Its only going to get down to 48 degrees so that shouldnt be a problem but didnt know about this storm thats going to hit.

Hi Kev, once citrus are outdoors, thunderstorm or not, they stay out..
I'm not worried about drowning since I mix my own soil, and it's well draining..the problem is wind..because soil is light, pots tip over..I have to run out (if it's not raining cats and dogs) to lift up.
As long as your soil is well draining, I wouldn't worry about T-storms..if you have strong gusts that's another story..Actually, a good rain perks plants up. It seems if soil has time to dry, then rains fall, 2 days later plants have buds galore..another thing is any dust that accumulated over winter is washed away, leaves look fresh..and let's not forget humidity.
Of course living in Il, I'd worry if we had cold rain, and temps dropped under 40. BTW, how's your citrus doing? Toni

My Meyer is doing ok at the moment,I havent had to do much with it.
I did have to use a fungicide on it for some powdery mildew,but thats all.
I have been having to focus all my time and energy into trying to get my Powderblue blueberry bush back happy agin,which is still an ongoing battle lol.

I know you said you mix your own soil,what mix do you use for your Meyers?
I probably should transplant mine out of the 3 gallon pot I bought it in soon :-)

As long as it's getting the best care..Sun, humidity, fresh air, well-draining soil, fertilizer and proper watering.
I use a product called Superthrive..it's a hormone and contains 50 vitamins..2-4 drops per gallon of water, once a month..I want to add, before sending this post, some people disbelieve it works..some call it a snake oil. LOL..I've been using ST a number of years, seen with my own eyes, the best results. You can find ST on Ebay, several online nurseries..it's also sold at hardware stores, and local nurseries..less expensive buying online. A 4oz (9.99) bottle last a couple years, depending on the number of plants you have..They suggest 10 drops per gallon of water for stressed/dying plants.

Soils for citrus..Since I have about 300 plants, (not all citrus, lol) it's economical buying 50lb bags of soil. 40lb Sand. 40lb Peat. Using a drainless plastic pot, I mix, (smaller portions as example, 4 cups All Purpose black soil, 1-2 cups Peat, 1-2 cups Builder's Sand bought at Home Depot, (not beach sand) 1-2 cups Perlite...if you can find small pieces of bark, (not large used for orchids) helps with drainage..
Mix well..Add soil in the pot you intend using..place plant inside pot, standing straight..Fill in mediums, in a rotating motion, so tree stands straight. Do not exceed the graft line..(never cover graft) Then soak...water from the top or set pot in a container of tepid water, intil it soaks up until to the top of soil..Soil should be wet from bottom to top.
If you have one tree, it doesn't require much work..
I take plants outside on cloudy days, or when rain is expected..(for the wk) Night or early morning is best..I've had problems placing plants outdoors when sun was blazing, and no rain in the forecast..spray foliage w/a hose...daily if possible. Water perks leaves, and knocks/kills insets if any away are present..Keeps leaves clean, washing away dust particles, and creats a green house effect.
You may need to add fresh soil every year or two. And/or repot when roots are crowded..roots will grow from drainage holes, looking for freedom. The plant is saying, I need a larger home.
Living in Il, I've been successful repotting into containers 1-2 sizes larger..IMO, it depends on the climate..if one lives in a hot, humid, long summer state, they have a better chance overpotting..Otherwise, too much soil chances are the soil will remain wet, and eventually kill the plant..

When you say you say you use "All purpose Balck soil" , what brand name do you mean? Some of the soils they sell around here would stay wet indefinately if I use them. Some of the BLACK soils I have used for the outdoords once wet turns to paste and muck or mud. I have also read so many posts saying, using sand, is one of the worst things to use, for it fills in the airspace or pockets in the soil, that eventually lead to the demise of plants. I am confused...... If you are making this kind of mix, how is it possible to be well draining, unless you are using something I am not aware of. Why does this type soil work for you, and yet not work for alot of others living in the same type of climate. The ban isn't just for canker, Florida also has a disease called HuangLongBing also referred to as "Greening". I wouldn't be in such a hurry to purchase trees from an area that had a chance of shipping diseased trees. The government doesn't have the ban in place to hurt florida nurseries, rather to protect citrus in all other areas of the U.S.
The "armstrong" I think would be a satsuma mandarin popular in Louisiana and Texas.
