need fertilizer help quick !

The weather here has been so cold that I did not get my type 3 clematis hard pruned. Plan on doing that this afternoon but notice my last year rose food is a Miracle-Grow water soluble rose food .Ratio is 18-24-16. Would this be good or should I just forget fertlizing after pruning?My soil is good,heavy Iowa dirt!! Clems in question are Polish Spirit, Prince Charles, Huldine,Betty Corning,and Etoile Violette.I would have to drive out of town to get something different and I would rather do that then ruin my clematis.

You can't ruin them with fertilizer unless you burn them by not following directions when mixing the fertilizer with water or by over applying it.

There is nothing wrong with that fertilizer. I prefer longer acting granulars myself, rather than fast acting liquids but that is personal preference.

I use tomato food or rose food for my Clems & they seem to do good. Early spring after pruning I give them some bonemeal, along with some rose or tomato food. I fertilize again after each flower flush. I have used some of the Bloom Booster products & also Kelp and all of the different fertilizers work good. You want to stay away from a regular feeding that has high nitrogen. You will get all leaf growth with little flowering. Mamoo

The label should say when to water, probably 24-48 hours after application. The reason for watering beforehand is to get the weed control granules to stick to the weed leaves. It needs to sit on damp leaves, dissolve, and dry out for a period of time. Once dissolved and dry, watering afterward will allow the dissolved weed killers to be absorbed into the weeds. In theory anyway...you'll get much better results spot-spraying or using a concentrated weed killer in a hose-end sprayer, unless you inspect every weed and make sure the granules stuck to them.

You should have limited sucess if you can keep it watered. Spread 150 lbs of soy been meal around July 4. Plan on overseeding and use lawn fertilizer early September. Water that fall planting properly and fertilize again mid November. You should have a great lawn next spring.

If it was me, I would not fertilize now if you did a full application of actual nitrogen when you seeded (1lb per 1,000 sq. ft.). However, it may give the grass an extra boost, and it probably wouldn't hurt anything if you wanted to. Half rate would make sense, though. Also, I think a lot on here would discourage the use of winter fertilizer. A soil test would tell you for sure what you need, but if you don't have that, a "regular" fertilizer, would probably be just great. What are the numbers on the winterizer bag?

The leaves do look healthy but the roots and p-bulbs look badly dehydrated. It is as if this plant has never been watered properly in its life. Cutting off all the dead roots will not leave anything to hold the Catt in place in the new mix. Mind you I am of the opinion that one can grow anything in anything but I don't go against the grain just to go against the grain. Potting Catts in straight sphag is going against the grain. A bark mix in clay or plastic is standard for these and in the right light and with the correct watering they will thrive. This time of year the right light should be found outside and everyday watering in the size of pot that you will end up with (~5") will not be too much. H

Thanks for all your help.I did the hard prune which I had not done before and used the rose fertilizer. Should be okay as I followed directions.I have never done much with fertilizer but have good soil so they have done well with exception of Huldine. Think maybe I purchased a "lemon" in that one as it disappeared twice last summer.Am seeing some growth comming from the ground so maybe there is still hope.

Having good soil is the key. Good for you I wish I could say the same. You won't need to fertilize much at all with good soil. You are right to wait on Huldine some times it takes a clematis longer to settle in. It comes down to the root system. If you have a good root system the clematis will come back if hit by any problems. It takes a new young clematis about 3 years for the root system to build up & get strong.
