the little clementine that could!

So I'm pretty proud of myself, even though I probably had nothing to do with this little miracle. I've been eating clementines like crazy this winter and came across ONE seed in one clementine about two months ago. It was a really plump little seed. I put it in a wet paper towel in a plastic bag and brought it home from work with me. In the few hours that it had sat in the paper towel, it was already splitting!! I got excited and planted it in a little cup with perlite and peat moss. I put a plastic baggie over the top and poked holes in it and placed it under my plant lamp. I've kept it moist and tried not to baby it too much, because that's what I tend to do with plants, LOL. Yesterday I took the bag off the top and this is what I have.

I just noticed today that the root is growing out the hole in the bottom!! This little guy really took off!

So this is my first time growing something from seed and I'm excited. What should I do now?? I haven't fertilized it or anything yet, just been keeping it moist. Should I try to pot up or repot it since the root is coming out? I'm afraid to mess with it!! Help!

Repoting is always nevious for me but I would go to a bigger pot and repot in a good citrus soil. I have grew a few from seed seedlings dont always make it but this one looks really strong. If you do repot be very careful not to break its little roots if you dont break the roots and put it in a bigger pot it should do good. Good luck hope it helps would wait until it got bigger before i fertlized it. And when you do like a 1/4 dose until your sure its good with it.

Even more strange I got polyembryonic seedlings from same bag of Clementines. And the seed sprouted different the seed is still in dirt and shoots came up two. The first one I ask about pushed seed out of dirt and opened out of soil. Hybrid citrus is crazy lol I cross pollinated my libson lemon and mewei kumquat to see what it seeds grow. Getting into my new hobby I guess lol.

Hello! You might not see new growth until Spring.... then again, you might see growth within a few weeks. It depends on the vitality of the plants prior to re-potting, as well as the vigor of the plants in the recovery. Water each container with cool (not cold water) to make sure that the soil volume is moist. Put a chopstick or skewer in the container to help you judge when the lower layers are drying out. In two weeks, apply some fertilizer at half-strength or less. As you know, this is not the optimal time to be re-potting. So keep that in mind as you evaluate both the 5-1-1 mix and the recovery of the trees. Josh

Esmeralda, I would pot it into a larger container and then, once it is used to its new home, trim if necessary. I try to keep my trees to 6-7 feet tall at the most. Some are bushy too. I'm not sure which is worse...lol! In order to get fruit, you will need to let them grow. However, I have seen a beautiful Meyer lemon tree that was kept to about 4 feet tall, but very bushy that produced almost 40 lemons. It is close to 10 years old though. Have faith..it wil work out!

I, like Cookie8, only ate Mandarins when I lived in BC (Canada)..in fact the news cameras would meet the ships as they came into dock in Vancouver when the "Japanese oranges" were being offloaded. I moved to Ontario, and at Christmas went looking for mandarin oranges.. not to be found anywhere.. such a disappointment to find only clementines and satumas! I've become accustomed, but not wholly accepting of the new flavour and type! Cookie8.. do your remember that smell as you unwrapped the green paper from around the first mandarin? It was heavenly :)

Thank you! I know it'll take a few years to get fruit but that's okay. I'm just excited it's been this successful this far. I've only been dabbling in all this for a few years now and I'm still learning, so I'm loving this! I'm still afraid to move it just yet, I don't want to screw this up!! And there's hardly any information regarding clementine trees specifically out there. I'm not sure what my next steps should be after repotting, just keep doing what I'm doing? I'm so nervous!!
