My first clematis order

I am an old garden rose enthusiast in Covington, Louisiana and have wanted to combine clematis for some time. I ordered Veronica's Choice, Gillian Blades, Multi Blue and

Asao. If you have any experience with these varieties or any advice I would appreciate your input.

Clint...congratulations on your upcoming Obsession for Clematis...for you will now become addicted..First off you will want to plant them about 6 inches from your Climbing Roses..I am assuming you are planting them with Climbers as they can easily reach anywhere from 4 to 6 feet wide and 10 to 12 feet tall...Dig a nice deep hole and in that hole put a nice layer of composted cowmanure and then a layer of compost...remember to plant your new Clematis anywhere from 2 to 4 inches deeper than they are in the pots they arrive in..plant them at a slight 45 degree angle towards your Rose...water well...remember that Clematis like to stay moist and loves Rose Fertilizer..did you say what size your Clematis are going to be?..For if they are a small plant you will want to plant them as I said but in a one gallon pot till the fall and allow them to get a nice rootsystem before planting into your Garden with your roses..remember water well...I am growing Asao and Multi-Blue, they are both pruning group 2, which means to only prune to shape and remove dead vines, you might wanna check out COTW ..a great place to learn about your Clematis...in saying that I always treat my Clematis like pruning group 3, which is hard prune for the first couple of years in my gardens...Sometimes the pruning group 2s can get wilt but don't fear they will come back...just thought I would throw that in the mix so incase it happens you won't think it is dead..ok?..Let me know the size you are getting...Jeanne

I am! Better looking than any roses I've ever received from heirloom, no diss intended, the root system and all looked great! High country's roses look symilar( SP?) in comparison. I only have a small green house, and the ones that would fit in it I put in their lol. I plan on buying a bigger one because I don't think I will be able to plant them until next spring , and just pot them up into bigger pots when they need it. Right now they are in one gal. and enjoying the rain since we got some today! then I will put the smaller ones back in the greenhouse until wed, and get a bigger greenhouse for them all! My husband thinks I'm crazy for my love of roses, but I don't care! he has his passions and I have mine!

Clint...I usually set my new clematis that arrive in the mail in a shady place (Or just morning sun only) and water it really well..this helps it after it's trip..especially if it's dried out a little...then the next day I plant...dig a nice size hole and plant it 2-4 inches deeper than it was in a pot...place your plant at a slight 45degree angle towards where you want it to climb..I always put a handful of Bonemeal in the planting hole and water in really well...keep your clematis moist while it is acclimating..and boom..it should do fine for you...congrats on your new Clematis..Happy growing..Jeanne

I am so envious! I bought a Jackmani bare root and potted it up and then poof, it was gone. But, I kept providing care and now have a pair of very small leaves. (it's in my "hospital" - some morning son, then filtered light for the rest of the day).....we'll see, it could be a pampered weed. But, I am impatient and bought a Sweet Autumn after hearing so many great things. It's thriving and looks like nothing is going to stop it from being the monster it has a reputation for being. I've fallen in love with vines of many kinds, but can see Clematis becoming a favorite. (That red is beautiful, too).

Did some searching on the internet and now not sure its Star of India although that's what it was labelled when I bought it. Its is a group 2 tho.
