pruning Jamckmanii Superba

Hi Everyone,

I have a Clematis that I planted last spring. It is a Jackmanii Superba, I know I'm supposed to cut it back hard. The winter was very mild and the clematis started coming out sooner than I expected. I went to cut it back and saw that it has put out a lot of new growth. In fact there is a completely new shoot about two feet long up about 5 feet off the ground. Is it two late to cut it back? It's going to be painful to me if I do. Thanks Beth
