Easy Clematis to go with Kocher Red and Sombreuil

What colors/ varieties of Clematis do you think will go well with both these roses (Kocher Red/ Fields of the Woods/ Rhode Island red and Sombreuil) on a single trellis in partial shade? I am looking for recommendations for a clematis that is relatively disease free and continuous/ repeat bloomer and that won't overwhelm the smaller Sombreuil. This is the second year for my roses. The wall behind the trellis is a white cinderblock wall. On a trellis adjacent to the roses I plan to plant a Passiflora incense (purple/ deep blue). I was initially thinking of Rhapsody and/or Rooguchi, but now the passionflower is going to be blue and I'm not sure I want to repeat the same color in the Clematis. I also find myself interested somewhat in the double flowered varieties, just because they are so splendid.

Separately, has anyone tried growing moonflower vine (Ipomoea alba) intertwined with roses?

I am ordering Guernsey Creme to mix with my Fields of the Wood (a/k/a Kocher Red and Rhode Island Red). I have a kind of tunnel thing with climbers which are all different, so I think thinking about using Guernsey Creme with all of them. They include Parade, Awakening, Blaze, Fields of the Wood, Clair Matin, Don Juan, Madame Driout, Sombreuil, Antique 89, Eden, Pele and Secret Musk Garden climbers. I think with all the colors I have the subtle white Guernsey Creme will tie it together.

OK, so I did some more research and I think I will be planting a Rooguchi (for the flower shape and the deep blue color) and then a pale blue Type 2 or 3 with the roses. I am considering Blue Angel (Blekitny Aniol), Blue Light (Vanso) and others. I do want to avoid lavender, purplish or mauve shades. Are both of these true pale blues? What about Multiblue? Any other suggestions? I would prefer to leave out the nonclinging vines.
Also, is it easier to grow Group 2s with roses because then in the Spring you don't have to disentangle the vine from the rose after you prune it to the ground like I think you would have to do for a group 3?

Buford: Yes, that is what my rose looks like. Yellow leaves, green leaves, and new red stems and growth. It's only the Sombreuil though. The hybrid tea, grandiflora, Darlow's Enigma, and Rhode Island Red (Fields of the Woods, Kocher Red?) are as usual. Michaelg, I looked closer this am and found that the leaves do have green veins on many of them. So is it an iron deficiency? Cemeteryrose, I did soak the roses with a Miracle Gro solution this am (contains 0.10 chelated iron) and will see what happens (NPK 15-30-15). I was hoping this would not get complicated, as I like to keep things real simple, but I suppose I have to look into the compost situation now. My mix, if anything is more green than brown (lots of coffee grounds and garden and kitchen greens). Usually wet and slightly smelly while it 'cooks', and that's when I add paper or leaves that I keep in a bag adjacent to the bin. But the finished product was dry, crumbly, delicious black and odor free. It was from a 2 year old batch.

Brandy, here is a closer up view of Avant Garde. The color changes as the flower ages and then the sepals fall off leaving the pink frillies in the center. Others to consider would be C. texensis. The color of the flower will vary depending on whom you purchase it from but it is a beauty nonetheless. Another one that is more burgundy red is Gravetye Beauty. I almost hesistate to recommend her because she and her relatives, Etoile Rose and Princess Dianna are mildew magnets in my garden, but nonetheless will throw her in here. Another new one for me is Peveril Peach. Definitely not peachy in my eyes but perhaps the flowers will change as the plant matures. To me it looks a little like Duchess of Albany but the flower is much smaller. Here is a comparison shot of D of A and Peveril Peach.

Hi Yeshwant there are a few blues that you can think about using.Perle d Azure is a mid blue and is truely stuning plant that grows great with climbing roses.Perle d Azure is in the Jackmani group so it is easy to prune you can prune it low and just pull it off the rose.the other is Dorothy walton she has blue flowers and is also in thejackmani group.Lord Nevill is one of the darkest blues it could be a little harder to prune but can be done with a little patient.ascotiensis would be great it has large blue flowers also in the jackmani group.Will barron has wonderful blue flowers with yellow stamens in the center and the last great blue is Lady Northcliffe kind of a flag blue.Take a look at some of these good luck and happy gardening

HI Joe I'm popping into the discussion late, just to make some comments about relative hardiness. You're warmer than I am by a zone or two, so take that into account - still, when you're looking for hardy long-blooming roses having ones that are hardy a zone or two beyond you can help. Obviously Christopher and madgallica are going to have feedback more pertinent for your specific location. In my experience, Souvenir de la Malmaison is particularly winter tender and even in your zone will need some protection in the winter. Apparently SDLM has considerable tea rose in its heritage enough that it's a real wimp in cold. Consequently I put my last (maybe 5th) try at SDLM in my most protected and pampered spot along with 6 or 7 teas that I can overwinter in zone 5 with pampering. SDLM didn't even think about coming back with maximum protection in my virtual zone 6, so I'd put her marginal in even zone 7. She'll want protection even there. Kronprinzessin Viktoria, Marchesa Beccella, Rose du Roi (the one from Burling), and Clotilde Soupert are all winter hardy for me without much effort. I think La Reine might be in a better spot, though it failed to overwinter in a part shade spot once so far. For repeat bloom, the best is Marchesa Boccella - she's going to bloom with the frequency of the others you mention. For me, KV and CS are mostly spring and fall bloomers, and my Rose du Roi is too new to repeat much at all (just approaching its third year). Reine des Violettes laughs off the cold and is reliably hardy, just be sure to get the real version of this one (Burling has the real RdV for instance) as there's a once-bloomer sold under this name as well. As others mentioned, teas in your climate will take quite a bit of work but are marginally doable at a much reduced state. If you want to indulge for your own sake and fuss (as opposed to your mom's), the more hardy teas for me have been Maman Cochet (probably the most hardy), Mrs BR Cant, Duchesse de Brabant, and Madame Antoine Mari. Georgetown Tea made it several years as did Rainbow. None of them bloom profusely but they're a novelty in zone 5 and as such fun for me. Cynthia

I like Mrs. Cholomdoney, a light blue. I have this one and like it a lot. I think Blue Angel might be to aggressive. I don't have this one, but have read that it can get pretty big. What about Venosa Violacea? Mine doesn't get too big and the flowers are beautiful.

Have you looked at the vitacellas? I get two to three flushes a year and are vigorous and no problem with dieback. The blooms are smaller, but they really look good with roses.

Type 3s, which includes the viticellas and some large flowering varieties, get pruned back to about a foot. Type 2s are light/no pruning. I think it is easier to use type 3s with roses. I like the viticellas because of the smaller bloom with roses and also I have no problems with mildew and wilt on viticellas.

My Blue Angel looks just about the color in the Chalk Hill photo, sort of soft lavender. Only really blue one I have is x durandii, a herbaceous/integrifolia which is closer to blue in my yard than in the picture at Chalk Hill. It looks a lot like Rooguchi.

Alba luxurians is a viticella that is white with green markings and Betty Corning a pale lavender/white, but very vigorous. Madame Julia Correvon is a bright deep pink on the cherry side, difficult to match with roses, but awfully pretty with soft lavenders and whites.

Ascotiensis, a large flowering group 3, is a gorgeous deep mid-blue (still on the purple side) and Prince Charles is a more compact paler blue (pale purple). Both look great with roses and don't overwhelm them.
