What can I say, I was bored yesterday.

The balcony

The crocuses are already done blooming. Most of the greenery you see in the flower boxes are the tulips, which haven't budded out yet.

Clematis Palette #1

I have 3 Clematis Palette, but this is the only one with reddish leaves, so I'm wondering if it was labeled wrong at the nursery. No flowers on any of them last year. Hopefully I'll get some this year so I'll know what I have.

Clematis Asao #1

I have 2 Asao, and both are growing so quickly that you can practically see it with your bare eye. They even have buds at the tips of the new growth, so I should have flowers much earlier than I would have otherwise expected. I bought them from a nursery mid-summer last year, and they were each about 8' tall and had flowers on them when I brought them home.

Clematis Inspiration

This one was thrown in as a freebie with the other ones from Koi Gardens. I don't know that I would have chosen it on my own, since it doesn't cling or climb. I've put it in the corner and am hoping it will trail down and provide some pretty flowers next to my parking spot. I'm definitely pleased that it's putting out a bud so early, no matter what else it might do over the course of the season.

Violetta, I love your random post showing your sproutings. I wouldn't worry too much about the reddish colored leaves on one of your Palettes. The first leaves a clematis throws up in the spring may be adversely affected by alternating periods of cool and warm weather. Let the plant mature before attempting to decide whether it is a mislabeled clematis or not.

Like you, the warm weather here is prematurely causing some of my clematis to begin pushing up new growth. I have several that are already 4 to 6 inches up and we are still about a month away from our last average frost day (April 15th). I have gone back and forth about whether to pinch the tops out since doing so is just going to encourage more growth. I finally bit the bullet yesterday and did pinch back a couple of the taller ones since if I wait, I know I will be hesitant to do it later if we don't get any more frosts this year. I guess it is a wait and see game from here on out!

Once again thanks for showing pictures of your spring growth.

I have no idea whether this new growth is premature or not, since this is my first time ever growing anything outside. Maybe Buyorsell will weigh in on that. We very rarely get freezing temps around here, so I wouldn't be surprised if we were done for the season. I hope hope hope...

See why I keep whining about space limitations, though? Look at what I have crammed into that little space! I barely have enough room to sit out on my balcony with a book if I want to - but it's well worth it. (*big grin*)

Thanks again, especially for the candytuft ID, they are the stars of the spiral right now but they're starting to go to seed. I have a fountain in the front yard, and although I agree it would look great I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle in that particular spot. Birds love fountains, consequently they need to be cleaned frequently and it always involves splashing a lot of water on the ground and walking around the fountain a bit. Maybe I could get a birdbath and hook it to the irrigation system, but a statue would be easier and require less maintenance. I think I'm a one fountain person, a second is not something I relish taking care of but I wouldn't dream of getting rid of the one I have. Most recently a bench has been added to the garden, I realized that the place where the path brushes the raised bed is the coolest and most comfortable spot to hang out so I mentioned it to the DH and next thing I knew we had a new bench. I love it, it's perfect for sitting and enjoying my new area.

I am so sorry to hear of your bad experience! I remember Aloha T. Saying the plants would be on sale the last day. What a gyp! Upland is just too rich for my blood. Did you stop and talk to Mona Lisa? She only had cuttings, and it aounds to me like you bought only potted plants. Many of her cuttings she gave me bloomed late last summer after rooting in April, and I was quite pleased. I am glad to hear you stopped at JJ. I wish I could go there someday, but I hate the long drive from La Verne! Although I am glad I haven't gone, because I would bring back more plants! I have been to the show twice, last year and this year. I won't go again either. Last year I didn't spend much time. I have been to Upland Nursery on my own, and there plants are nice but way aver proced! This year I took the time to stop and look closely at every plumeria grower. Since I have decided to only buy named varieties from ow on, alot of the displays were unnamed, so I wasn"t interested. At least MonaLisa"s were all cuttings of named varieties. I have way too many now. I certainly don't need more! Good luck with your new plants No-Clue. By the way, you can post pictures using Photobucket, along with a few other websites. My post made above at Jul 14, 12 at 22:46 came through to Hotmail instantly. hmmm....gremlins? Here is something interesting...I've checked the box earlier to get the replies emailed to me, yet now the message below says, "Check here if you would like post replies emailed to you. blah, blah, blah." Usually it tells to to click or something if you NO LONGER want email replies emailed to you. hmmmm......Well, I'll check the box again. I wonder if it did that because I am replying again so soon. I think I originated the thread breezy's referenced above, which started out asking a slightly different topic: "who can take credit for the design of your kitchen?" But I was very surprised to learn that (according to folks in the industry/"in the know" who participated in that thread) homeowners have given implicit permission to photograph our homes. Whether that is current practice/"the way it is," that does not feel right to me. I am a private person and I can't believe someone can photograph my own home without my permission. Wanting to photograph my home is flattering, theoretically, but to have my home photographed (and posted to something like facebook?!) without my knowledge? I would be upset. I don't think your architect has the right to do that (unless photography/use of project for portfolio/marketing is explicitly spelled out in your contract. It was not spelled out in ours.) As others asked, how small a town/easily identifiable is your home? I don't really use facebook now so it might be different, but I remember being absolutely shocked that I received photos/details about other people's lives (young children!) who I didn't even know in my facebook feed. Perhaps this makes me sound paranoid, but think how many people may have just seen the inside of your home or who may be "liking" forwarding those photos of your home. A blogger could find them and post them. Someone following that blogger could post your home to something like this forum or someone else could pick it up and post it to houzz.com. This is not supposed to happen theoretically, but photos are posted here all the time without identifiers/permission, (even innocently, like "here is an inspiration kitchen I found, what do you think that wall/cabinet color is?") Someone started a thread here to say she was surprised that a photo she had posted here to kitchen forum of how they'd organized their kitchen drawers ended up featured on houzz without her knowledge/permission. By commenting to your architect's post, anyone following now "knows" your name/who you are. Everyone has different comfort levels with internet privacy, but I would definitely feel uncomfortable. Ohhh to see something green outside. That won't happen here for at least another month and a half to 2 months, if the snow ever melts. So I guess I'll just have to enjoy you more southern gardeners gardens for now.

It's so fun to see them coming up! This is the first spring I've ever had outdoor plants. I'm definitely hooked!

Violetta, I do see why you are limited space-wise. Don't know if you have ground floor room or if you live upstairs in your complex. One thing to consider is if there are common areas in your complex, you might be able to convince the association to let you plant them in the ground after you convince them how beautiful clematis are. Just a thought!

Miguel, that's an interesting thought! Once my balcony starts going nuts I'll bet it wouldn't be difficult to talk everyone in the association into it.

(And thank you - you just reminded me that I meant to call management to ask them about something else...)

Neat pictures. I really enjoyed seeing them. Seeing the clemmies wake up is one of the best parts of early spring.

They are not early, this is normal time for them to wake up here. Many of my II's have buds on them.
