clematis as groundcover in mixed border

I have grown many clematis in the past along the fence at our old house but at our new house in the country we have no fences. My new gardens are very large and open. I have placed a few garden ornaments around for clematis' to climb but want more. Can I use clematis as a groundcover in what is largely a mixed border? Smaller shrubs are lots of roses, weigela, spiraea, hydrangea, itea sweetspire. Main perennials are peonies, daylilies, heuchera, echinacea, salvias. Will clematis climb these & overtake them or are there some varieties better suited as groundcover? I'd love a list of suggestions, any colours.

Thanks

Sharon
