disadvantages of not pruning type ii?

Greetings. I am rather new to the clematises. I'm jumping into this wildly, however. My focus has been on the type III clematis because I was told they are less susceptible to wilt, and I wanted a high success rate. I do have about a dozen or so of the type II clematis, and I'm wondering what are the disadvantages of NOT pruning them, or of pruning them down to about 24 inches each late winter/early spring? I'm not sure I'll have the patience to look for new wood/old wood. I was told by a clematis guru that he cuts ALL his clematis down to about 12-24 inches.
