Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control for Mealybugs

I've read a small number of recommendations for the use of Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control to control and eliminate mealybugs on INDOOR plants.

I searched previous threads, but didn't find answers to all my questions. I would like feedback about:

1.) Have many of you tried this or is it only used by the few people that recommended it?

2.) Can it be used on most types of succulents and houseplants? Is anyone aware of types that might not tolerate this chemical?

3.) How much do you use? I've seen recommended mix rates, but I'm wondering how much to use per plant. Do you simply use the mix to replace the plain water for one regular watering?

4.) Is anyone aware of any particular dangers of using the product indoors?

5.) Are there any disadvantages of using this product for this problem?

I like soap and water, or Neem oil on selected plants, Or 50% acohol, mixed with water, or Saffer's soap. Or Windex. I use household products. Norma

Norma, I've been battling the problem with the solutions you mentioned for a couple of years now and found that they just aren't effective long term solutions for my situation. Like you, I have a fair amount of plants. Lots of individual attention to each possibly affected plant is not really an option. I can generally keep the situation under control, but have not been able to eliminate its recurrence. I want something that will really take care of the problem for good.

IF it's the same active ingredient in the same concentration, it should be safe. This sounds to me more of a labeling issue than an actual safety issue. My understanding, albeit limited, is that it costs a LOT of money to test the safety of a product on a crop. And, until they test the safety, they can't list the crop on the label. So, they aren't going to do the testing if it isn't "appropriate" in their judgement for the product.

Hi! My husband and I have a linden tree on our property and in 2006, the beetles just decimated it. It was our main source of shade, so having it defoliated was awful. Anyway, I got some of the Bayer insecticide and applied it but I can't remember if I put it on in fall or spring). The beetles still got to the tree this summer, but not nearly as badly. It looked like the ends of the branches got nailed-all the newer growth. What was weird was we'd lived here for six years before this ever became a problem. And we have a small property, too, about.25 acre, plus there are about 50 rose bushes on the property. So now I am not sure if the Bayer helped or if the beetles just weren't as bad this year but I guess I'll try it again for the next growing season-but I am thinking that maybe I should wait until spring. The tree is fairly mature now-it's as high as our two story house, and about 15 feet across. So I wish you the best, Alexander3, and if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it. (and my husband has treated the lawn with milky spore and nematodes, etc., and he keeps the rose bushes treated with something systemic-plus alot of manual control, i.e., knock 'em off the bushes into a coffee can, etc. Oh, and my dogs love to eat them!--so I knock the beetles out of the tree in the early morning, and the dogs run around under the tree munching away-it's rather disgusting)

Well, according to the website you can apply it anytime of the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged but they state fall is the best time for control of aphids. The only fruit/nut trees they have listed as safe to use on are: Apple, Crabapple, Loquat, Mayhew, Oriental Pear, Pear, Pecan and Quince. I don't get how it is safe on those since it moves into every portion of the plant even new growth. So the fruit MUST take up some of the poison? Not sure I'd want it in anything wildlife or myself would ingest. Would not the flowers and nectar also take it up making it toxic to bees? Some time has passed since anyone has posted on this, but I used the Bayer Advanced product for fruit trees (apple in my case) - in about May of 2013 on 3 apple trees. Now that harvest time is here, my apples are bigger and less diseased then I've ever seen them. The trees are very old - over 50 years and not much has been done to them except the last few years - slight pruning and a little one-time application of this or a similar product - and sometimes a lime sprinkling. Anyway, I am now so concerned about having used this product that I'm looking for comments from anyone else who has. I called the company a couple of weeks ago and was told that the amount of Imidacloprid used in the product is so small that it will not affect the fruit in terms of it's 'edibleness'. OK - so I picked several bushels of apples and started making pies, etc. I did eat some - raw and cooked and this past week my tongue has been kind of numb. It is possible that I burned it or overbrushed it but am not sure. I'm wondering if anyone else has used this and had anything similar. I'm just trying to figure out if it could at all be related to the Imidacloprid in the apples. I really hope that is not the case. Others have eaten a few slices of pies and are not having any reactions so I'm probably just being paranoid. My trees are huge and I used less than what the recommended amount was - but reading all the different posts - I thought I'd resurface this and ask some follow-up questions. (Had tons of bees on them this year and used the product after flowers were all off). As I'm about to hit 'submit' - I'm realizing that my daughter's friend gets a numb tongue from apples - maybe its in a lot of the apples we eat and children would be more 'allergic' / sensitive to this .... ? food for thought.

brandon, I use this product, but its not exactly the same you posted above. It is called Bayer Advance
12-Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed Concentratecolor>. I use this one because you can use it on container plants, but I think the key word is
"OUTDOOR" plants. Personally I don't think it would be a good idea if you used it indoors? You might want to email Bayer and ask them if their product can be used indoors. I attached a link below that says it can be used for outdoor trees, schrubs, Listed Fruit and Nut trees, container plants, but again it does say outdoor. I have used it on my out door container plants and this stuff is awesome. It also adds a little bit of fertilizer in your plant. It has precise directions on the label for container plants,like 1tsp for 1 gallon container, 1 Table for 3 gallon container. Mix with appx. 1/2 to 1 gallon of water. Just enough to wet the root ball. It is also recommended not to water the plant till the water leaches out for about 10 days after applying or it will wash off. So what I do is water lightly during the next ten days after application.I also do not use it on any thing I am going to eat in at least a year. I had a really bad potted Meyer Lemon that was infested with leafminer and I used it on it and it worked great. Apparently lemon was not one of the listed fruit trees... Now the tree is pest free, absolutely healthy but I am not planning on letting it set fruit for at least one year. That is what the company told me when I called them. I use it mostly for my flowering plants, tropicals and succulents that have had infestations, or want to prevent it from getting infested. Use with caution as it is a systemic...

I have used this on all my bonsai and succulents with no adverse effects ever. But, I use it on them when they are outdoors.

My dose has been about 1 tablespoon per gallon of the product you are asking about - I have not tried the one that puglvr describes, but I may.

oh - to answer another of your questions - I water each plant thoroughly first before I water through with the systemic.
