Looking for dwarf seedless Kishu mandarin tree

I have not found any nursery locally selling it - I seem to have visited all the nurseries that I can find local to my area in my quest for this unobtainable variety since last June. I would like to buy a couple of these trees for my side yard to plant in Feb or March. Does anyone know where I can buy the dwarf Kishu mandarin tree locally (I prefer 4winds)?

I am also on the lookout for a Gold Nugget mandarin - found one outrageously priced at Yamagami's nursery in SJ so far. I am still looking for a "reasonably" priced Gold nugget dwarf tree too.

Any help appreciated.

Have you tried going directly to Fourwinds Growers in your area? They're in the East Bay Area (Richmond, I think) and they sell both cultivars of Mandarin via internet.

Thanks, Joe. I called Four Winds and they told me that only "licensed professionals" and wholesale buyers are allowed into their premises and that they are not open to the public :( I guess I will keep looking locally and order on the internet if I cannot find anything by March.

They look like great healthy trees. I heard about that tree sale but I missed it and I live more than 5 hours away :( If I had known about it before I would have tried to find someone to pick on up for me. It's pretty tough to track this tree down. I'll be in Corpus Christi tomorrow, I'm actually considering driving to Houston from there just to find one.

I was going to ask if you found one! I'm glad you did. When it recovers, you might look for someone who can graft some of it onto the sour orange. BTW, I found some sour oranges at a gourmet store, and am going to make orange marmalade with it. These are the Seville oranges. I suggest you remove the little fruit that it has on it. It really, really needs to spend this year growing roots and strong branches. It has a long way to go to recover from neglect, and needs all of its energy to go into that. It is recommended for citrus anyway, not to let them produce fruit the first year for just that reason. Yes, I know it's hard, I've had to do it with 7 citrus so far, and am planting 3 or 4 more this year.

Citrus make very nice screening trees, and you can keep your Seedless Kishu to 10' by drop crotch pruning. And, after having to get up on a ladder last week to put up a netting structure around my cherry trees, I realized the value of my "no ladders" rule in my garden, lol! More than once I nearly took a header, due to the uneven ground. If your rootstock in standard and trifoliate, most likely in our area (our commercial tree growers) would be Swingle. The Seedless Kishu trees at the UC Riverside Citrus Variety Collection were probably 15 to 20' tall, so no worries on getting enough height. I've included a very nice PowerPoint presentation done by Tom Del Hotal, the past-president of the San Diego chapter of the CRFG. Tom is an absolute expert with regard to fruit tree pruning. If you have any questions at all about how to maintain proper tree size, canopy for screening, etc., Tom is the person you'd want to contact. He is great, and really, really knows his stuff. He has his own business and also works in the retail nursery industry. Also, Walter Andersen does carry both semi-dwarf and standard trees. Gold Nugget is a vigorous, mostly upright and moderately large tree, naturally, so I would suggest getting your tree on a semi-dwarfing rootstock, or you're going to end up with a 20' tall tree at maturity. Just for the record: I understand that Andrew has not been satisfied with Logee's. My experience has been different. Although the citrus plants, for example, have been smaller than Four Winds' at the same price, they have grown well. Moreover, I have not been totally satisfied with Four Winds' citrus. Spring of 2009 I bought 4 that arrived looking very good. Two have grown very little. Another had a bad graft with the top and bottom ends sticking out that took a year to heal. The last has grown very nicely. I have never grown dwarf citrus before and so I may be expecting something of them that they do not deliver. I am not totally panning Four Winds. I would order from them again. Hope my experiences help someone. Cath

You can't go to their growing grounds but you CAN buy from their website. And they ship.

When you say a "dwarf" Kishu, Ashley, are you asking for one grafted on a Flying Dragon rootstock? That might be very tough to find. Semi-dwarf with pruning seems an easier way to go.

I bought both those mandarins down here at a family nursery in Gardena, I think the Kishu was from 4 Winds and the Gold Nugget was from somewhere out in Riverside.

Yes, dicot. By "dwarf", I meant a Kishu and a Gold Nugget each grafted onto Flying Dragon rootstock as 4 Winds does (using their terminology, actually).
I am even thinking of driving by Menlo Growers's location @ Gilroy to see if they have them when I go to the outlet mall next time.

I would stick to your choice of Four Winds stock. Menlo Growers has not turned out to be true dwarf in my experience. If you don't want them to ship to you ask your favorite retail nursery to order them for you. Al

Thanks for the tip regarding Menlo growers' dwarf varieties, Al. I actually love all my FourWinds dwarf collection of trees and would like to stick with them, if possible. What I do not like about shipping of trees is based on one bad experience I had with Logees long ago. I will ask my retail nursery if they can special order them for me.

Too bad you don't live in Socal, I was just eating from Kishus from Jon's Nursery in Somis. They are great tiny little mandarins. I am planning to get one in 2010.
