Clematis in Wisconsin - Newbie to planting this

I am thinking of planting Clematis (something white or red, possibly) along my fenceline this year. This will be my first time planting, so I'm looking for advice, feedback, etc.

We have a high quality cedar fence. First, do I need to be concerned with wood rot?

I have posted a link here of a site I found regarding Clematis - this will be my first time planting. This article says to let it grow in a pot for awhile, and don't plant directly in garden. Thoughts??

Any nurseries anyone can recommend? I found Spring Hill Nursery online - all their plants are guaranteed. Anyone use them??? Otherwise, I may go with a local nursery.

Here is a link that might be useful: Clematis website
