Post a full pic of the tree, please. Meyer are a bit tricky...they like a lot of nutrients, regularly. How are you feeding the tree? Also, the leaves don't reduce very well. Like Moochinka said, it's best to develop the tree into a bonsai without fruit, then let it develop just a fruit or three for the final showing....which you'd probably do in alternating years. The other thing about Meyer....if you pull flowers, it'll make more flowers, and that will use up a lot of energy. So, when you do get fruit, and do intend to pull it, let it grow to nearly marble size before removing the fruit. Josh

Hej, congratulations. well, i bought meyer lemon a week ago also and i am not expert but i can share what i read so far about Meyer lemon is that keep it in sunny place for atleast 6 hrs a day. do not let the bottom of pot dry, it should be good moisture level and the top can be bit dry. so, always check moisture level in pot before watering. If you just bought the plant then probably it would have been in small pot you can switch to relative bigger pot without removing old soil. because it is not right time to reduce or remove old soil completely if your tree is holding fruit and flowers and if you want to have them. And search for suitable fertilizer , because citrus plants need furtilizers. keep in touch with this forum coz I found this forum really helpful and there are really nice people and expert with really nice ideas.

Guys, such negativity... here are my 2 cents. Many people swear by the 5:1:1 and 1:1:1 mixes, as they work very well, but there are also several other simple mixes that should be fine too. Regarding finding ingredients for the 5:1:1 and/or the 1:1:1 mixes Msugrl has some good advice, if you can't find Turface locally, there are several places online it can be ordered from. Alternatively, you can search locally (or online) for "calcined clay" this is the actual material that Turface is made with. If you don't want to go through the trouble of making the above mixes, there are also many alternatives that work reasonably well. For example, I know a very experienced citrus grower, that lives in an area with 45-50 inches of annual rainfall, who just uses Miracle Gro garden soil (this is not the same as Miracle Gro potting soil) for his containers. Personally, I have been switching my trees to a 1:1 mix of the Miracle Gro garden soil and cedar (or hemlock) mulch. There are also several other very experienced growers using similar mixes to this. The mulches and garden soils should be available at nearly any Nursery or Garden Center. Some people will cringe about using the garden soil alone, however, as one of its primary ingredients is peat. For me, the 1:1 mix seems to have a good balance of water retention (without becoming a soggy mess) and drainage, although it may not be as ideal as the aforementioned 1:1:1 and 5:1:1 mixes. The only caveat with the more simple mixes, is that you may need to pay a little more careful attention to them. In my opinion, one of the most important general things that is necessary to have healthy looking citrus (or any other container plant) is to pay attention to the plants and containers. Get a decent container mix that is appropriate for the needs of the plant and importantly be patient and observant (don't overreact and change too many different cultural conditions at once, don't water until the soil is soggy, don't let the soil dry completely, make sure the plant is getting the proper nutrients, etc...) Above all, do not stress too much over all of the nitty-gritty details, if the whole process becomes a burden, then what's the point? Others here (and hopefully myself too) have given volumes of helpful advice, it's up to you to decide how you want to use it. Please let us know how your tree does. Best of luck, -Scott

Liminqueens, thanks for the science, learned something today! :) Mike, I'll give it another week or so, since we just had a freezing advisory a couple of days ago and days are not quite in the 70's yet, more in the 50/60s right now. You're saying its ok to bring them in and out like that? I saw a post not too long ago from someone that had a tree that did great on his patio, and then lost all its leaves and deperished the second he brought it back inside for the winter. Something about light difference shock and temperature issues. How do I avoid my tree going bald when I bring it back in? I'm going to be very candid with you: that is the very reason I have been going back and forth in my mind and hesitating in bringing the trees outside for the summer, because of all the posts here and elsewhere that show bugs infestations on their Meyer lemon trees, and trees in shock when brought back in. Is the risk vs reward worth it taking them out for a couple months? If you tell me it is, I will believe you but it's a question worth asking, ya know? I have been holding my breath around my trees since I got them, and considering they seemed to be doing ok, I was frankly afraid to do anything that might hurt them or expose them to parasites. So if I'm going to take them out on the patio, I want to make sure I don't screw it up. The Patio has mostly shady areas (for most of the day, anyway), and full sun areas (same, for most of the day), but no filtered sun areas, since its a patio and not a garden and I don't have other trees out there. Does that pose a transition problem for my trees? And if it's going to be really cold 2 weeks after I bring them out, what do I do, take them back in for the night? Now about soil, keeping in mind that my trees are going to stay potted and go back in for the winter. I've read a lot about 511, and it's also available already mixed, so that's definitely a plus. I've read about gritty soil as well, but quite frankly, I don't have the experience to decide which one is best, so right now it's pretty much flip a coin to pick one for me. Should I put something else at the bottom of the pot, like gravel, to make sure it drains properly? I've also read people using coconut fiber pads to help the water drain well. A lot of questions, I know. And I'm sure I'll have more of them before I'm done, too. So thank you again for taking the time to help.
