Artichoke Agave spines turning white

Hi!
A friend of mine brought back an Artichoke Agave from our recent trip to California. It's spines started out reddish-black and since we got back has been re-potted and the spines are turning white. In the photo you might be able to tell, the upper and center spines are still black while some of the bottom and side ones are white. It otherwise seems to be doing well. Could it just be the adjustment of moving to Northwest Wa and being re-potted after being root bound?

The soil is earth gro potting soil mixed with some peat and sand. The mix is pretty sandy and well drained.
