Sometimes as a Max ten gets bigger, one or two leads decide to go their own way. Mostly the plant grows up, but not always. I like to keep the plant growing up, and mostly it does. To keep it neat and to avoid having it sprawl all over I clip off pieces. This works the same as any plant division. Do it when there is new growth. There will, of course, be no roots involved. Not to worry, just pot it up and pretend it is a plant. It will grow its own roots because it needs to. This makes an ok trade or gift if you disclose the fact that it is still establishing roots. I have seen them for sale that seem as if they are fresh rootless cuttings, and I think that is not cool. A plant for sale should have roots.

Are you srue they are naturalized? There has been a lot of reforestation plantings in NY. I don't know how much Japanese larch was used, but I would be surprized if they are natural reproduction. Are they all the same age? Are they growing evenly spaced? If so, they were probably planted. If you see some variation in age, and especially variation in spacing, i.e. some growing in groups and others spaced more widely, they they are probably naturally seeded trees. michmatt, Thank you so much for giving it a name! (I just re-read my post and I meant to say "string of hearts", NOT ears LOL) All I have done was brought it home, hung it in a filtered south facing window for winter months. Other than that, just hangs in front of the house when it is nice out. Let dry between watering. I try to only use rain water when possible. I think I am just lucky to have it still alive, as I know not what I am doing with Hoya's. : ) What I was worried about is the soil it came with. You know, that kind that almost seems waterproof & has to be literally soaked in order to gain moisture? It all seems to try and run between the pot and right out the bottom. Stick the whole thing down in rain barrel & plant floats out of pot, kind of stuff. : ( Thanks again, Rose

thanks all. Potted them up in some decent soil and put it in the shade. In a huge deep pot. Unfortunately the garden bed they will eventually go in is non existent at the moment. Still in the process of being built. The roots were just bare and hanging on the bottom so it wasnt sustainable to let them be. Will leave them until next summer to divide as to not stress them to much. There are a number of plants in this clump. I have an unheated shed that should work for the winter.Thanks all for all the help, looking forward to getting more hostas.
