I was just over at the place today, and the hosta looks a bit worse for wear. We have had a few hot days and the plant is suffering in that hot stone circle. I was able to separate the top from the base (as they were not attached and there was no roots that far) and put it in the shade.

Apparently, this hosta was growing in this stone circle and then moved on top of these stones. It has just air underneath it. I will pot them up and hope for the best.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I would be happy to hear them!

Potting works great. I have one of the smaller collections of potted hosta for this group. I would consider getting it happy and healthy and then putting it in the ground in a nice morning sun location about a month before your first freeze.

Most of us "potheads" do not have extensive freezes, which allows us to leave them where they sit for the winter (most of us are in zone 8 or 9). Overwintering in a pot takes extra care when you have long stretches of freezing temperatures.

do not wait until fall ...

hosta grow roots .. storing energy for next springs emergence ... in late summer ... it would be better to divide them.. and then they grow the roots ... rather than growing the new roots.. and massacring them ....

i would go for it now ... within the next month or so ... or very early fall ...

they WILL ... look like carp for the rest of the year ... but you will be rewarded next spring ...

if someone in a warmer zone than my z5 mi .... says different ... you might want to lean toward what they say ...

i just dont want you doing it in late fall ....

you could also divide soon .. and just jam them into a nursery bed.. for a month or so ... if you need to complete the bed you are visualizing ....

thanks all. Potted them up in some decent soil and put it in the shade. In a huge deep pot. Unfortunately the garden bed they will eventually go in is non existent at the moment. Still in the process of being built. The roots were just bare and hanging on the bottom so it wasnt sustainable to let them be. Will leave them until next summer to divide as to not stress them to much. There are a number of plants in this clump. I have an unheated shed that should work for the winter.Thanks all for all the help, looking forward to getting more hostas.

they will not need the shed for winter.. in your zone ... just tip the pot over.. so water does not accumulate while they are dormant ...

i hope you used a decent MEDIA ... rather than soil ...

many of us mix in some very course material like bark fines .. or nuggets.. to aid in drainage ...

I have these clay balls that they use here for that I mixed with sand, perlite and rose potting mix. Its what I usually use for a good draining mixture. Pine bark fines, no way to source that here.

Thanks to everyone last year for your advice. The plant has come back very nicely this year (it is huge) and the bees love it. Does anyone have any ideas of what variety it might be? The flowers attract lots of pollinators.

Sure has grown nicely! I'm guessing that it could possibly be a GOLD DROP? Anyone else have Gold Drop, as I do not.

with no history .. and over 10000 named varieties .... i highly doubt you will ever be certain with a name ... so you should never sell it under any given name ...

but we can have fun trying to narrow it down ...

a start would be a leaf measurement ... i am thinking of gold DROP as a rather smallish leaved hosta... your leaves look to huge ...

now.. i hope you understand... that now that i typed all that .. some nerd will roll thru and just happen to know this old time hosta... where are you bruce.. lol
