What have I got here?

Here in southern dutchess county we have a ton of conifers with no needles on them at all. Since I only know of metasequoia and bald cypress that are decidous I think they are dead trees. I have just recently taken notice to them, but I remember that they were green a few years back. We have thousands of them. They just look like sticks now, but there are a significant number of younger trees mostly norway spruce and white pines growing beneath them. They used to fill in a huge area, and most everyone had a few in their yard. I have managed to find a few cones still attached to branches that have fallen. They look exactly like the ones on this site: http://ungwe.org/blog/2005/05/07/09:54/pine_cones_on_branch-thm.jpg .I can't tell what has done them in, but they cover a lot of acerage. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The cones in the photo are Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi). Larches are deciduous, so they're leafless now (but not dead!!).

Wow, that is definitely what it is now that I have looked at some pictures. I would never have thought. Now the real question is what are thousands of naturalized Japanese Larch doing in Dutchess County New York? There are whole stands of these trees.

regsy18 I am no guava expert. In fact I have never eaten one let alone had a guava tree. However your pictures look exactly like the guava pictures that came up in a google image search for guava.

michmatt, Thank you so much for giving it a name! (I just re-read my post and I meant to say "string of hearts", NOT ears LOL) All I have done was brought it home, hung it in a filtered south facing window for winter months. Other than that, just hangs in front of the house when it is nice out. Let dry between watering. I try to only use rain water when possible. I think I am just lucky to have it still alive, as I know not what I am doing with Hoya's. : ) What I was worried about is the soil it came with. You know, that kind that almost seems waterproof & has to be literally soaked in order to gain moisture? It all seems to try and run between the pot and right out the bottom. Stick the whole thing down in rain barrel & plant floats out of pot, kind of stuff. : ( Thanks again, Rose

It's only a shot in the dark, but have you looked into I. setosa? The only reasons I ask are the insignificant standards (look like barbs in your photo and would be full sized petals in most other species) and the width of the foliage, but there could be other species that this bloom would match more closely. Good luck!

Yes, I correctly interpreted the chique. I thought maybe it was the Canadian spelling. :-) I've often wished we could edit our posts on these forums. What would you call these? Cocktail knives and forks, maybe? The forks are 6.5" long, and the knives, which have pointed blades, measure 7.5". The case is lined with black velvet and white satin. No marks whatsoever, except the forks say Stainless Steel England and the knives say Stainless Steel Sheffield England. The damage to the one knife must have occurred some time ago, because the piece of china (or whatever) I found in the case doesn't cover all of the missing area. This 5" diameter dish is divided. Because.......? Candy and nuts, maybe? It has a sterling base and was made by the Concord Silver Co., Concord, NH (1925-1942).

Are you srue they are naturalized? There has been a lot of reforestation plantings in NY. I don't know how much Japanese larch was used, but I would be surprized if they are natural reproduction. Are they all the same age? Are they growing evenly spaced? If so, they were probably planted. If you see some variation in age, and especially variation in spacing, i.e. some growing in groups and others spaced more widely, they they are probably naturally seeded trees. Very interested in your response!

Check out Tamarack Larch (Larix laricina) too, that's native in New York. The cones are smaller (about half the size), with straight scales (not bent out at the tips like Japanese Larch). But Japanese Larch is native to an area of Japan with similar climate to NY, so it is 'pre-adapted' to your conditions and could very easily become naturalised (or even invasive)

Ah, it is probably Larix Laricina (Eastern Larch), which is native. I have never noticed this tree before, or even heard of it. The cones do look more like the japanese one though, They flare out and make a perfect rosette. About an inch long, and rounded. Every scale flares out like a bell lip.

also note that these cones were on branches that had fallen, and are probably very old. They may have just curled with age. I am willing to bet the trees are the native Larch, as there are so many of them, and in so many places in the area. I had always thought that they were dead trees. I never paid enough attention to realize they were not "dead" all year round.
