Thanks for sharing your photos. Good to see your clematis blooms during this blustery cold fall day. Expecting a freeze tonight. I also have bugs eating the late blossoms.

Hi Pmermakov, I always love to see your clematis!Do you have earwigs in your area? that's what has been eating mine only they aren't as dainty about it. They have been really bad here this year.The cold is now slowing them down.

Whether to cut back in the fall or wait until spring depends on if you will get fresh growth on the clematis if you cut back in the fall, not so much which clematis you are growing. In my zone 4 I cut all my clematis back in late fall as we do not have enough warm temps after killing frosts to get fresh growth. Think back on your other perennials, do you have enough warm weather to get new growth on them? If so, clematis should probably be pruned in the late winter or early spring.

Caryopteris holds off until August in my garden and attracts butterflies by the hundreds. Mine is planted between two Montauk Daisies (aka Nippon Daisies). The caryopteris is just winding down as the daisies take over. For anyone who's not grown this plant...it's wonderful! It's a sub-shrub (like lavender gaura, Russian sage, etc.) and grows to a 4'x4' globe with thick foliage/stems...almost like a succulent. I prune mine down twice/season and it is always covered with hundreds of 3-4" white daisies Labor Day through Halloween. Also, hardy hibiscus will bloom well into late September...early October here. Sedums have faded by mid-August but still I leave the flower heads standing because I think they're attractive in their own right. I rely heavily on berry producing shrubs, foliage, & ornamental grasses for late season color. By mid-September to early October...my perennials are winding down...and so is their gardener!

Your "experiment" is ridiculous in its extremes. Almost every plant should get at least a brief soak, as most plants received are quite dried out. Also, plants need to be well watered when planted and daily for about two weeks to get established. If plants are initially potted in semi-shade, I find they are easier to care for in the heat of late summer. When Dan Hansen said, "Skip the soak," he was using hyperbole to emphasize the dangers of crown rot, especially a problem in the South.

Where do you live? I'm sensing the Chicago area. What kind of grass do you have (assuming fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and/or rye)? Now is the time to fix it. Early spring (January to March) can work, but any later and you're back to having a crabgrass lawn again. NOW is the time. Most problems in lawns come from watering wrong? If you were not watering at all, that's often much better than watering too frequently. Did you water at all?

Enjoying another viewing of your great clematis photos. Still a few blooms here and there on many of mine. Each is treasured as soon the vines will die back and be cut back until spring growth.

I love the combination of 'Etoile Violette' with 'Emilia Plater'. Such a lovely harmony of colors!

I also enjoyed the photo of the seed heads on 'Helios'. Quite striking!

Beautiful clematis..some of the variety names are new to me. I will buy nothing but prunning group#3 from here on out..that way it is no guessing how to prune it and when.
