source for 'holiday' cactus?

Hi.. does anyone know of a good (cheap) source for Schlumbergera (Easter cactus, Thanksgiving cactus and Christmas cactus)? I love them and would like to start a collection of named varieties.

Holiday cacti are technically cactus, they're just not desert cactus. I like to have mine in a looser mix than just regular potting soil--quite a bit of bark and perlite. I wanted to start over with some of mine and have rooted four sets of three cuttings since winter and they're growing like mad in that soil mix. Most of them are two segments each, but some were just one and a couple were three. I don't know if the number of segments makes a difference, but I've heard from unreliable sources that they shouldn't have a lot of branching off the segment that will be rooted. I would ask for multiple cuttings like Rob wrote and take socks' advice. I generally rotted 1 out of 4 cuttings because they were a little too wet too soon (I'm guessing), having watered them lightly right away, even though in a very porous mix. It was also rather cool where they were. So I had four segments from each plant and ended up with three of each, which will eventually make for a decent sized 'plant' after they grow and ramify.

Beth I think you’re asking how long to keep the fruit on the plants for? It does take longer then one would think. I wish I could give you an exact amount of time, but I can’t. Some cactus fruit like my big Opuntia will take close to a year to ripen, but generally the smaller the fruit the less time it takes, but the small ones still take months. I can definitely say yours are not ready yet. If I had to guess they should be ready by mid spring (May). This is a total guess;). I usually wait till they look dehydrated and sometimes they’ll have a split. Here’s some pics from Desert Plants of Avalon The fruit below I wouldn’t remove yet. But this one looks ripe for the picking. Lastly keep the fruit away from rodents and birds because they will eat them. I know from experience and it’s such a bummer;).

I've ordered from Whittons Greenhouse and got really nice plants.
I have a order in now with Bob Smoley, he said around 10 days but I've heard that he can take a really long time to ship so I'm hopeful I'll get them before it gets to cold around here.
The spring cactus are harder to come by, I find a few here around mothers day at Wal Mart and a local nursery.

Nancy if you get a collection started I'd be interested in doing some tradeing, I have a good size collection.

I just got my Schlums from Bob Smoley in less than a week, that must be a record for him. I ordered last fall and finally had to cancel due to cold weather.
Plants are a nice size, they were grown in a 2" pot it looks like, nice roots and from one to four multi stemmed sections per plant.
I ordered 12 and 4 were substituted and got one extra.
One even has a couple tiny buds.

He has the best selection I've found and I'd order again from him.

Besides the sites mentioined above, have you tried Walmart? They're in great condition when first shipped...lol
Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter cacti are now on display at Walmart. Easter comes in orange, red and purple.
Holidays come in pink, purple and white, pink and white and red. Toni

Toni, Are the holiday cactus at your Wal Mart allready?
I havn't seen any around here yet.
Lowe's also gets in some nice ones but not this early. Last year Lowe's had some named ones in the larger sizes but the smaller ones wern't named.
