Anyone know of a good garden center in the Charlotte area?

Hi, I'm new to the Charlotte area and I'm working on a butterfly garden but I'm having trouble finding a good variety of butterfly plants. I moved up from Florida where I liked to use porterweed and milkweed but I have yet to see these two plants here. I found plenty of butterfly bushes and some pentas at Home Depot and Lowes but when I asked for milkweed in the garden section they asked me if it was some kind of liquid.

Anyway, if anyone knows of some good nurseries in the area, preferably north of Charlotte, I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Roundtree is one of my favorites. We have Youngs right by my house but I find them overpriced with a decend selection. Roundtree has the best of both worlds from what I've seen the past couple years.

Wow, Pam their website certainly looks good. I'm thinking that I'll combine a visit there with a fall pilgrimage to Fairweather Gardens in NJ. I have brother in NJ and one in Bucks county PA so I could go for a weekend and visit too. Thanks so much for the tip and the web link.

Oooh Erin..you and Farmer J's are sorely missed. There I could find the unusual varieties and colors and the prices..I'd have paid more if it would have helped keep J's open. If Blueangel wants to open a center I hope he will stock it with annual/perennial plants and not garden supplies and certainly not giftware. Stock the unusual trees (like J's did). Stock the zone 9 annuals..although I still have jacobinia(sp) that has come up every year for 6-7 years now that I originally bought at J's. Finding the unusual trees is the hardest now that J's is gone. Garden Secrets used to be my other source but since they moved by SouthPark Mall, they have no room for trees. They also had great roses and marvelous perennials. Like J's, they cared what their clients desired in plants and they took good care of the plants for sale. Looks like Banner on Monroe and 51 will be the next to go. I see the zoning change sign up there now. Me..I'm at that age now where I need someone knowledgeable to help me. Someone who cares that it's planted in the right location and planted properly in soil that's been properly prepared. You don't need a degree in landscaping to be a skilled gardener, in fact the degreed 'landscapers' I've fired in the past 20 years..well it's disheartening how little they care for anything but an income. It's disturbing how much they rely on the computer for research and design. Even more disturbing how the degreed guys aren't the planters. Sometimes they aren't even there to supervise.

Below is a list of places that offer the MG program. Not all offer them every year, and some offer them only in the winter. I met many wonderful people in this program and have learned quite a bit, but be aware that it is a volunteer program geared to teaching the community horticultural practices as based on research from NCState. You will be expected to donate MUCH time. I keep thinking what my property might look like if I spent those hours at home instead of on MG projects, but then I remind myself that I believe in 'helping others,' so I ignore the chickweed and bedstraw, etc. Notice that one is listed for your area, but I was under the impression that the P.L.A.N.T. program (great one) has taken the place of MG programs there. P.L.A.N.T. is more 'native plant' friendly and, for me, appropriate for gardeners concerned about water use, the environmnet, composting, etc. Have you checked that program out? I just addressed the question about Rainbow Mums on another thread here. I've been there at least a half dozen times, purchased plants, talked to the owner and his wife. Their plants seem such a bargain. That said, Leo Blanchette and Jim Seawright have been in business for over 30 and 45 years respectively, breed plants and are established respected members of the larger horticultural community. These speciality nurseries are in a class by themselves. You simply won't find half of what they sell anywhere else. You sure won't find it locally grown or as healthy at Russells or Mahoneys. But you asked about RB Mums. It is worth a stop. If you want a plant that looks 5 years old the minute you pop it in the ground go there. But if you are looking for 200 kinds of hostas and 150 kinds of astilbes dozens of different solomon's seals and hundreds and hundreds of other plants go to Blanchette's. If you want to see the guys dig up the daylilies you pick, go to Seawrights. On my part, it is simply customer loyalty. So I mention them and not the other.

Corneliusncz7, If you want some white milkweed seeds, I'll be glad to send you some. I have started a few and they look good. I'm in Statesville and will have my yard in the Statesville Garden tour on May 6 & 7. Nancy

Welcome to Charlotte.......... There are several nurseries I visit for perennials and unusual plants.....
Kings on Stallings Rd. in Indian Trail, Dearness Gardens and Whiteners on Old Statesville Rd (North Charlotte), and there is a place on rt. 70 off of 77 that I think is called Farmhouse Gardens. If you want daylilies, thare are also a host of daylily nurseries around and right now Karrikers has their iris and peonies in bloom. (Kanapolis). Don't miss the Daniel Stowe, Winghaven and UNCC sales this week! Where in Charlotte are you?

I'll second Dearness Gardens in Huntersville. Was just there this morning and all of their plants look so healthy and well taken care of. Then I went to Home Depot and cried at the difference in quality. Do they even water them?????

Thanks to each of you for the great information. I live up in Cornelius and I wonder if I may have passed by Dearness Gardens and Whiteners heading home a couple of times. I'm finishing up my koi pond and my next project will be to finish my butterfly garden that surrounds it. I can't wait to get out and check out a couple of these local nurseries. Isn't spring great?

Turtle Creek is up in your area. When they were in East Charlotte (nr. Eastland Mall)20 years ago they had a grand variety of native plants.
Butterfly bushes get so huge, you might want to try the dwarf variety also. Less digging, fits in a flower border too. I have an attractive white dwarf butterfly that's doing well.

Turtle Creek does have a good variety. They are kind of expensive though. Justin, I live close to Cornelius, if you want some sweet flag or pickerel rush for your koi pond send me an email.

Where is Dearness gardens located in Huntersville ??

I have to also say Dearness Gardens and Whiteners. Both are fabulous. I shop no where else. :-)

Hi Justin,

Welcome to Charlotte.
You should come to our garden club, Eveningshade Garden Club. It meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in Huntersville at 7:30. Most of us are transplants to Charlotte so could help you a lot.
Farmhouse Nursery in statesville has a lot of unusual perennials. Garden Grove and Dearness Gardens are both in Huntersville on Old Statesville Rd. Both are good.

For pond plants and daylilies you need to check out Betty Brown in Davidson. She is a private residence but she has several acres and sells pond plants and daylilies very reasonably. She has a wonderful selection of plants. Send me an email if you are interested.
