Seediness in mandarin and Clementines

I was planning to plant a Nules Clementine about 20' away from a Yosemite Gold mandarin. This won't add seediness to either fruit, will it? My understanding was that only seeded citrus had this effect on mandarins.

I don't know about the Nules but the Yosemite Gold is suposed to be fine in mixed plantings. You will need something safe for mixed plantings as bees will carry citrus pollen for up to two miles and I'm sure there is other seeded citrus in your area. If nothing else, cover the Nules when it blooms if it develops seeds.

The Red Nules is a new mandarin release. This is straight from the W&N propagation advert material:

Genetically Seedless. This means you can have it in mixed plantings and it will
remain seedless. The pollen has proven to be sterile and will therefore, not pollinate plants near it.

BTW where did you purchase it? I drove 2 hours to San Jose yesterday visiting nurseries picking up various fruit trees I was missing from my wishlist -- I'm gonna kick myself if there were some readily available!

I'm interested as well. I'm in Peoria. If I don't get the tree, perhaps I could get a branch so I can graft it into one of my other citrus trees. On the other hand I'm thinking, why pull the thing up? graft something else onto it and enjoy the different fruits. I mean the root system is probably established, so why not just do a "sex change" you know. Budding is pretty easy to do and cheap. You probably could get fruits on the grafted branch right away.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, there is no such thing as "California Clementines" or "Cuties. What those are, are a combination of a few different mandarin varieties to extend market time. The early "Cuties" are a variety of different Clementine cultivars (depending on ripening time and contracted growers), and the later "Cutie" are W. Murcott mandarins. So, you should be able to find these are retail trees in Texas. No need for budwood unless you feel the desire to learn to graft citrus. One of the best mandarins out there, that meets the "Cutie" criteria - small, easy to peel, seedless (or nearly so) and sweet is the Seedless Kishu. I know it's available in Texas, and the Seedless Kishu is a better tasting cultivar that the Clementines or W. Murcott in my humble opinion. It's only detraction is its size. It's very small. But then, that's the attraction of the "Cuties" marketing ploy - small for kids. I'd just opt to buy a Seedless Kishu mandarin and you've got exactly what you want, that is also better tasting. Afourer is the other name for the "W. Murcott"... not to be confused with the Murcott. They are both similar tasting and what here in California, I THINK, they're marketing as "Cuties" and other seedless type clementines (seedless when grown in the right situation). Anyway, someone here at GW warned me not to place the two in the same yard because of cross pollinations and seed. And when I researching it on Dr. Google, I got overwhelmed by all the agribusiness information... now I'm too confused. One of my nurseries says it needs a pollinator, and one of my local nurseries thinks Four Winds have made all their drwarfs self-fertile (not needing a pollinator), to make matters more confusing. Just wondering if anyone here knows about pollination and the Four Winds Dwarf Clementines. Thanks! Anyway, If you google pllination and clementine, a bunch of links to the California agribusiness websites talkinga bout how the W. Murcott and the Clementine are having trouble both being used here in this state.

Satsuma--Clementine, or Mandarin?

Hi Patty, Thanks for the link. The tree down the street that I've had fruit from--I'm wondering if it is really a Satsuma. I thought it was, all these years, but the link said that Satsumas don't hold well on the tree, but this tree holds its fruit great and they are still tasting good and they went through freezes and taste even sweeter afterward. I ate some about three weeks ago and they were like little sugarlumps. They are seedless because they have very few seeds in them. The owner was an USL biology prof and I'm wondering if he got an experimental tree from the USL Horticultural Center. If so--The tree was a success! (It's now ULL, not USL anymore.) Every person I described the tree to said they thought it was an Owari Satsuma, but who knows? I'll just plant my little tree and see what happens. I shouldn't even be anxious about the trees I got, but just enjoy watching them grow. :) Thanks so much, Vivian

The Red Nules is a UC Riverside variety not only patented, but attempted to be controlled with an iron fist. Search on the internet.

Clementine Nules is pretty tasty, but not red.

Yeah the stuff on Red Nules is strange to me. I misread your first line, since the red nules is a clementine as well. I thought perhaps I missed an opportunity to purchase the Red variety retail since I hadn't read an update on it for about a year.
