Winter dieback.

Last year was the first year for having brugs and mine were only(less than 2 feet) small when I put them in the basement.Through the winter they were in the dark,60 degrees is the temp down there, and I gave them little water. When I brought them upstairs in March, thinking I would give them an early start,I noticed the stems were hollow and all shriveled, right back to the soil,so I had to cut them right back and wait for growth from the roots. My question is, they are now 5 feet tall, and when I put them in the basement this winter, will the stems die back to the soil again? Are the stems supposed to become hollow like that, or did I fail them in some way last year?Would it be wise to cut them back any this year or just leave them? How much water should they have in dormancy? Thanks for any help.
