What do you do with this kind of winter dieback?

IÂve always kind of wondered about this and thought I would see what other people do.

Some of my Heucheras had a tough time this winter. On a few clumps the majority of the plant appears to be dead with only a couple of green shoots poking through. In cases like this do you just trim back the dead stuff or dig the entire clump and also trim back the dead roots and replant? I would imagine there are a lot of these underground which will rot in time. IÂm not sure if this is good or bad for the living part of the plant.

Thanks

Kevin
