Got Caleb's Results Back Today

I am so happy to report that the Vet's office called today and said that the biopsies came back negative for Caleb so it is NOT cancer. And it was just in time for the poor guy because his doting dad was apparently driving him crazy. I asked him how he was feeling this morning when I got up and he literally got up and ran out of the house. I think he now assumes that when I ask him anything in that tone it means a trip to the vet's or at least means I am about to start poking around somewhere looking for owies or applying some sort of medicine somewhere. He knows the word medicine and he runs when he hears that too.

But a million "thanks" for all the prayers and kind thoughts. Looks like we are likely to be around together for awhile longer. Thank God! He's my baby. Murray

SO glad! Hooray!

Boy, poor Caleb. The old guy is probably just DREADING it each time he sees you with that worried look in your eye...You probably give off the 'vibe,' too! Tif and Britanny knew me and the vibes I'd give off so, trust me, he KNOWS! You can now breathe easily, Murray, and give the old guy a break. Maybe, go out and get him a burger from In-N-Out or something to celebrate. :) (hide his pills in THAT!) Woo-hoo! We''ll celebrate on our end with a chicken sandwich or something (Cheli's allergic to beef...so we'll have to do something besides In-N-Out)

I probably wouldn't add all the lime. Your pH is basically right in the middle of the range that Tifway 419 likes to grow in. A little wouldn't hurt, as most rain now a days is acidic, but I would go easy on it. To determine the other amounts you need to convert acres to square feet. There are 43,560 sq. ft/acre. For P, you have 1.42 lbs/2000 sq.ft, and you need 4.6 lbs/2000 sq. ft. So you need to add 3.2 lbs of P to your lawn. Since the superphosphate you bought is 14% available, you need to add 22.85 lbs of it to your lawn. Your K levels are higher than the recommended, so no need to worry about K. Most fertilizers list on the bag what setting you should put your spreader on to properly distribute the product. If this is absent, then divide your fertilizer in half, and do a little trial and error with your spreader setting. Try to err on the side of not applying enough, and do the yard in a north/south direction. Once you do the whole yard, you should have some product left in the spreader. Then add the other half and increase the spreader opening a bit and do the yard in the east/west direction.

It's probably time to start a new thread with the new results. This one's gettin' hefty. Of all the feedings to miss, May is the most minor. It's much more important to feed well in late summer (organically) and fall (whatever). My first fall feeding went yesterday, and is now waiting for rainfall to activate. I tend to feed organically on August 1, September 1, and October 1, but technically the October 1 application is optional. I still like to do it, and it seems to help a lot. Overall, if the price of OceanGro is much cheaper than soybean, go with the OceanGro unless you have a really good reason to use the soy. In my case, it's the other way around; soy is much cheaper than Milorganite, so soy is my heavy-hitter. Soy: About 7-1-2, but if you said 7-2-1 I wouldn't blink. Good nitrogen, 100% slow release, and an excellent overall feed. Soy has no other defining characteristics other than being a good feeding. Around 20% will eventually become humus, but soy is on the low end due to the high nitrogen (which means high protein). OceanGro: 5-5-0. Good nitrogen, 90% slow release, and an excellent overall feed. Good, but slow, phosphorus source, although in a high P soil I'd avoid it for that reason. Contains 2.5% iron, so it's a good source of Fe as well. Around 10% will eventually become humus.

Based on backyard Ca and pH, maybe you did mix 2 up since you say you limed front yard and what you posted makes it look like back yard was limed. DO NOT put lime down again. The 6.3 is great and the 7 pushing high. Doing the lime was a mistake. If they aren't backwards, then liming was good because pH 6.3. If you did get the 2 mixed, it makes sense that P is getting locked up and Ca is higher. Me personally, I'd have to retest again now.

"just me 6" ... I agree with Kimmsr that you want to get the lime in there to start working, BUT I don't know that I think doing so before the builder levels things out makes sense. I just picture you distributing the lime well across the top of the soil, and the bulldozer coming and scraping the top 3 inches away here and filling in a dip there ... resulting in a really uneven distribution of the lime. If I were you I'd wait. If I read you right, we're just talking about waiting until Tuesday or Wednesday; I think waiting a few days is worthwhile to increase the chances you get your lime distributed pretty evenly. As to improving your "nasty sticky clay soil" ... lime will fix the pH, but I don't think it will affect the texture. You want better "tilth" ... not sure if a search on that word here will bring up articles that will help. Adding lots of organic material is the single best way to improve your tilth, for a variety of reasons. First, just mechanically, having lots of bits of organic stuff in between the sticky bits separates them and lets air and water in. Next, the soil beasties that are going to eat that organic stuff will, in the process, glue some of the clay particles together into aggregates (bigger bits), which tend to permit air and water to penetrate around/between them. Do you have a source of free municipal mulch? By that, I mean ground up leaves that a nearby city collected in the fall, let sit over the winter, and puts out for you to take the following year? That can be good stuff or it can be garbage-y. I have a couple of cities around me to choose from, and have a clear preference for one over another.... Alternately, if you're willing and able to spend, get a truckload of compost from a local nursery. Go there first to see what they'll sell you. My nursery sells it for $35/yard, and they're selling pretty nice stuff (ground a lot finer than the municipal free stuff, looks more decomposed, maybe is in a more managed pile over the winter?). Till it in to your soil after the builder and before you first plant. Then add more to the perennial beds. And keep adding more to any plants that can be mulched (nearly everything except grass) forever more. (Wood and bark mulches last longer, but ground up leaves feed the soil better.) By the way, don't let anyone sell you topsoil. You have plenty of the mineral component of soil already. You want more of the organic component, and that's the only part it makes any sense to pay anyone to haul to you. Don't let them talk you into a mix of compost and topsoil either ... that would be better for their profit, but not better for you. (UNLESS you have a shallow area you want to fill ... but then, the builder should fix that, right?) I know, I'm not giving a lot of advice on the soil test. But you asked how to make sticky clay better, and in my flower beds, compost and leaf mulch are what does it. - LCPW p.s. On the "posey power" ... hard to say without knowing what it is, and some facts about what KIND of clay you have. I have learned here that one kind of clay actually can be broken up well by a chemical additive that nurseries sell. But many many folks have asked about it and knowledgeable folks here have said, "you're in a part of the country with clay that won't be helped by that in the least". I'd say don't do it until you know more.

Thanks All, those IN-N-Out burgers must be good because my son-in-law cannot pass one of those places by without stopping.

And I will definitely take your advice Sherry and give him a break because he actually stops whatever he is doing (like licking himself) if he hears me coming or if I speak while he is doing it. I would hate to be striking fear into him when I am just trying to protect him. Murray

I am so happy that caleb is ok. Our eight year old dog had surgery this month. The vet thought it was a tumor but he had a very abcessed tooth.

Murray, I thought you might like to see a picture of Quinton's last day in physical therapy. It's called hydrotherapy (under water treadmill). It was taken last week. He had surgery for a torn ligament in September. They had to put a steel plate in to keep the bones from slipping. He was down for a good 8 weeks and went through several more weeks of therapy. He's my big-hunk-of-love *lol*

He is beautiful and it is amazing that he is doing that. Was it difficult to get him in there? I have gotten to the point where I feel soooo bad everytime Caleb goes in for follow-up because he gets so scared and I feel like such a meanie. He actually had to go back for an extra treatment because he got attacked just a block from our house by a pit bull dog who got loose from his owner accidently. It messed up Caleb's stitches so he needed to have staples put on but he is mending nicely now. The stitches came out a few days ago. The owner felt very bad and I didn't say anything to him and just paid the additional vet bill. At this point I am just trying not to think about the cost because I have my baby back.

Quinton looks like he might be part Newf and quite large too. I love his face. Where did you have to take him for the rehab? My youngest daughter had all kinds of alternative treatments to suggest for Caleb but I was afraid to take the chance with things like tumors.

Nice to see your post too, Penny. I was thinking about you today because I noticed my pipe vines have buds already. Apparently, they are as anxious for spring as I am.

I'm so glad his injuries were not severe but I bet it scared the beejeezous out of you.

Quinton's mom was a St. Bernard, daddy was a Labrador. I call him a Labranard *lol* I use to take Quinton to the dog park but after having been attacked twice by a boxer and twice by a pitbull we stopped going. I am fortunate, there is a rehab center near my home.

Your pipevine is blooming?!? Mine has died back :-(
