Someone asked what kind of camera I have

I have a point and shoot Sony Cyber-Shot but I've had it for about 3 years so the model I have isn't available anymore. I think it was around $250. I looked for one with a good zoom lens, and one that had a good macro lens for taking pictures of small subjects (like bugs) up close. Sometimes, the butterflies will let me get close enough to use the macro lens.

Cannon Powershots get good ratings too. There are lots of different models of Powershots and Cyber-Shots and the prices vary quite a bit for the different models. There are tons of reviews on the web but some are biased and most are snobbish. They don't like to admit that a $200 camera can take excellent photos. A lot of the articles are outdated too.

If you have access to Consumer Reports (check the library), the December 2010 issue has reviews on Basic Cameras. That one will be current enough so you could find the models that are mentioned in the article. It should show prices and give good unbiased ratings. I can see the title of the article through my library's website but it won't let me access the text yet because it's too current. Copy the article while you're at the library, then see which specific models you can find on Bestbuy.com.

The same issue has reviews on more expensive cameras too. If I had a bunch of money to spend, I'd like to have one that took good photos of MOVING targets like hummingbirds or butterflies in flight. My camera wouldn't score well in that catagory.

Thanks for the info Christie! It was me who asked. I actually already own a Canon Powershot SX200IS, and I like it pretty well. It just seems to me that other people's shots are always so much better than mine. I will keep practicing, and maybe I will get better. ~~Angie :o)

Well I have a lot more bad shots than good shots. It would help if the butterflies would hold still.

I'm going to stick my 2 cents worth in here. I've had many Canon cameras and have loved them all. My current one is an SX10-IS which has a fantastic "Super Macro" feature that allows 0" focusing distance - yes, you can set something directly on the lens and it focuses beautifully. Amazing feature. Also has a 20x optical zoom and an excellent lens, many options for control or total automatic. I can't recommend this series of cameras enough. Quality is *this close* to a dSLR (we also have a Canon 10D) and it really takes stunning images. There are 2 other models in this range since I bought my camera - the SX1-IS and the SX-20 IS. Marcia, I thought you lived in Thunder Bay... wow I really did drive past your place, mind you that was at least 7 years ago. Wanna know how embarassingly lost I was? I was going to Rushing River - DUH! Missed the turn! Motherduck, that sounds like a great camera. I was hoping to get something in the sorta $300-$400 range. Just to keep up with the Jonses you know... if you've seen some of the horrible fuzzy pics I have posted here...

I rearranged. How's this? TOP - I currently have the crystal bowl on my buffet in the foyer. It may or may not stay there. Depends on the size of the decorative plate I ordered that hasn't arrived. The decanters tops are off because they were too tall but you can't notice it honestly. I'm not completely attached to the crystal decanters. I just thought they were pretty when I bought them. DH think's it's stupid to have them because we don't really even drink. I could always put the crystal bowl back. And the platter in the middle (casserole thing is on top) that's laying down doesn't fit standing up. I was originally thinking about standing that up and then sticking the blue toile plate in front but the toile plate is also a little too big for the look I was aiming for. I didn't have anywhere to put the cobalt blue butter dish so it's currently between the glasses on the left. Not super attached to that but thought it was pretty and added some color. MIDDLE - The plates DO stand up. Not sure what I was doing the other day with the one side! They are however, wedged in there. A typical plate stand that I'm thinking of won't work because there's just not room. Any ideas? I'm about to slap duct tape to the back of them. BOTTOM- I put the rest of the plates that were originally in the middle, under the saucers and bowls. I tried putting the blue butter dish on the middle silver thing (that has the two blue items) but the base is too wide. BOTTOM BOTTOM :) - Got rid of the roses and stuck it back on the right (which was where it was before I got the idea to deck the top out) I think visually it looked better to have the big silver piece in the middle. I had the blue plate in the middle but the right side just seemed too heavy and I didn't have anything to balance it out right on the left. If I put two items on the left it started to look all jammy on the bottom. *Note -In this pic the plates that were in the middle weren't under the saucers/bowls yet. . . I like the top better nekkid. Think I will stick to doing maybe some seasonal stuff up there. Thanks guys! One more thing - the tassel I have is a curtain tie back. Where does everyone on here get the cute little tassels with the shorter/thin hangers? I searched "decorative tassels" on ebay and got much of what I have there.

I have a Kodak something or other, but wanted to mention that it has a Sports mode on it. At Grandparents Day at my GD's school, I was able to take freeze photos of the kids playing on the playground, and they came out beautifully! I love it. I will have to employ it now in the garden in that mode to see if it will do the same with butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds.

This camera was about $150 and has a 10X zoom lens as well. It's not great at stablizing images unless you have a tripod, though. I think the Model is a Z950 or something. It is a larger camera, which I like as an older person. Much easier to handle. With the smaller models I always find myself hitting the wrong button.
