Planning a winter trip to San Diego

Hi,

I am a gardener in Boulder, CO and am planning a winter trip to San Diego to study gardening and see the sites. What are your recommendations for what I should see or do? Are there any garden shows or classes during the winter?

I am looking for a house/pet/garden sitting opportunity in January or February. Dates and length of stay are completely flexible. I am a responsible, non-smoking woman with plenty of experience with pets, home ownership and gardens. If we can help each other out, send me an email, let's chat!

The nice thing about coming to San Diego that time of year is that it's the rainy season here (relatively speaking) and the aloes and other succulents will be plumped up and loads of new growth and loads of blooms. It's the best time of year to visit gardens around here.

San Diego botanical gardens in Encinitas (use to be called Quail), San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, the Rose and succulent gardens in Balboa Park, the beach communities like La Jolla and all up the coast have nice parks along with the beachs.

I haven't been to the Wild Animal Park out past Escondido in years. I've heard it's declined considerably but that's only through word of mouth. Even going over the mountains and down into Borrego Desert for a day is a treat that time of year.

Thanks tj, hanzrobo, and roro! It was a gorgeous day to spend in San Diego. Wish you all were there to share it with but alas pictures will have to do this time. Hanz...one of these days we will get you to a show. I think you would have a blast AND be broke, yes. The Central Coast Show is coming up in San Luis Obispo. Perhpaps? Roro - Jordy did have some entries even though he helped judged. I think that he just excludes himself from those classes for the judging time. Kelly Griffin was the main judge for the show. It was fun listening to the thought process of the judges. They were carrying around a mic to talk to the crowd as they judged. Yes, the size of some of the specimens were astounding! I live in Orange County but go to San Diego a few times a year. How old is your daughter? Depending on the day and time of day, Knott's is a little over 2 hours drive from downtown San Diego. But it is a fun (and educational) park and even if she is very small, the regular rides outside of Camp Snoopy will work. There are only a handful of fast roller coasters there. All you have to do is blink and you will find great Mexican food. They are all over. Old Towne is a good place to visit. I am not sure about Indian in SD. The water will be too cold to go swimming, but you have to go to the beach just to go and to walk around. Be careful about collecting sea shells. Technically, it is against the law to remove any shells from the beach, but if you're quiet about it I wouldn't worry about getting into any trouble. Last weekend I went to Laguna and picked up a bunch of beautiful tumbled sea glass and I kept 3 shells that were really unique. I am not sure which beaches in SD are known for having a lot of shells, but you'd be sure to find some along the water line even on beaches that don't have many shells.
