Do you mean Prunus serrula? Forest Farm does carry that. I just tried to order a Prunus subhirtella from them and they were out I think. Their plants rock! They are large and healthy and incredibly well-packed. They have always had a great selection of shrubs and trees, and now it looks like their perennial selection is broadening to make up for the void left by Heronswood sale to Burpee. I order the tube size instead of the gallon if it's available - plants are just as big if not bigger, and shipping is so much less.

wow that is some amazing bark! check it out. the fact sheet says it's a zone 5-6 tree.

I'm the tree specialist & buyer (and certified arborist) for a retail nursery in Menlo Park, California. If you are still looking for this cherry, I have some suggestions that will allow you to be hands on before you purchase.

Monrovia is a national wholesale grower / supplier for the Paperbark Cherry (Prunus serrula var. tibetica). If you have a local garden center that orders from Monrovia, they should be able to order one for you. Monrovia does require minimum quatities of each plant be ordered, so you may need to locate a larger retail garden center (usually an independent) that's willing to do this.

Another wholesale grower is Loen Nursery, out of Oregon. I'm not sure if they ship to Charlotte.

Thankyou wonbyherwits. I think I may be located beyond its best growing range but I swear the photo I saw of one last was in Southern Living.

the nursery that I use grows their own plants and they are in the Raleigh area. I will continue to watch the list which is updated daily.

I got curious and checked it out - the Floridata stuff says it's for zones 6-8, so the NC sheet may have a typo, although they do say it prefers cool summers. Most of the references are from England, so that may be correect. Good luck.

Dottie, I too saw this tree and wanted it. I found it listed as offered by Monrovia, so I would suggest an attempt to special order it at Young's or any other nursery which offers Monrovia plants (perhaps King's)

I think I just will order a 5-6 footer and a few smaller ones to spread around the yard..bite the bullet and pay the price.The big one will be getting full morning and midday sun but be protected against west late afternoon sun.
The others will be on the north side and I suspect I'll have to cage them to keep off the deer and rabbits for a time. I'm excited..hope they have it in stock to ship soon.
